Roughly 200 roles tied to Siri and Vision Pro are going, a headset games team is closing, and Google is being brought in on the assistant, days before John Ternus takes over.

Two hundred roles against the 166,000 full-time employees Apple last disclosed works out to about 0.12 percent of the company [1][7][9]. Nothing in that number moves an operating margin. What moves is which work continues: the team making games for Vision Pro is effectively shut and the group producing 3D video has been pared back, according to the Bloomberg report of the cuts [2].
Games and immersive video are the demo material for a headset. Withdrawing the first-party staff who make them, for a device Bloomberg describes as poorly selling [2], is a decision about how much content Apple is willing to fund itself, and it was taken before the incoming chief executive had to defend it.
The Siri half is the more structural one. A large share of the affected employees worked on Siri features [3], while Google has been engaged to help revamp the assistant [5], which has trailed the chatbots from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google itself [4]. Removing internal feature staff at the moment an outside partner takes on the rebuild converts a capability Apple owned into one Apple procures. Procured capability ships on a partner's calendar.
Apple's own framing is that it is realigning teams to "evolve" the business, that new roles will be created, and that a limited number of existing roles are affected [6]. The new-roles half is not checkable from outside until Apple next discloses headcount, which it last did in September 2025 [7].
Fortune reads the timing as getting unpleasant work out of the way so John Ternus arrives with clean hands, just over a week out from the handover [8]. Both consequences of that hold at once. He does not own the cut, and he no longer owns the option either: restarting a games team is a hiring cycle, not a budget line someone restores in a planning review.
The hardware backdrop does not argue for a second attempt. Amazon has raised prices across its own devices, taking the base Echo Dot from $49.99 to $79.99 and its 16GB Kindle from $109.99 to $149.99 [10], and says it did so after absorbing significant increases in memory and storage component costs for as long as it could [11]. Fortune places Amazon as the latest large technology firm passing memory shortages through to buyers [12]. A headset with weak sales is a harder internal case when the bill of materials is moving against it.
So the two products Apple has been questioned about most are the two it has just stopped staffing at full strength. Whatever Ternus says about either in his first months, the resourcing answer was written down before he had the job.

John Ternus is preparing to take the CEO job just over one week from the report, and Fortune wrote that the timing of the layoffs seems designed to get some unpleasant work out of the way and let the new boss come in with clean hands.
Apple is laying off roughly 200 employees in jobs related to Siri and Vision Pro, described as two of the company's most troubled products.
The cuts essentially shut down a team that worked on games for the poorly selling Vision Pro headset and pare down a group making 3D videos, according to Bloomberg.
Another big chunk of affected employees worked on features for the Siri digital assistant.
Siri has struggled to match the capabilities of AI chatbots from the likes of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Evidence-backed comparisons of source perspectives and observed adoption signals. Read the methodology

Evidence, demonstrated adoption, hype gap, incentives, and confidence are assessed independently, each on its own current evidence. How these are measured.
Thin but attributed
A single publisher carries the cluster, and the core Apple facts are relayed from Bloomberg rather than independently reported; the company statement Fortune quotes was also given to Bloomberg. What is first-hand is the Amazon pricing review and the confirmed spokeswoman statement. Specific, checkable numbers exist (200 roles, 166,000 headcount, exact device prices), but the qualitative pillars — 'poorly selling' Vision Pro, Siri 'struggling' versus rival chatbots, and the Google partnership — carry no data, terms or documents.
Actions taken, uptake unmeasured
Concrete corporate actions are observable: a team shut down, roughly 200 roles removed, and a full line of consumer device prices repriced with confirmed figures. What is absent is any market-uptake measurement — no Vision Pro unit sales, no Siri usage or query volumes, no evidence yet of how customers respond to Amazon's higher prices, and no named peers to substantiate the industry-wide pass-through. Adoption is therefore scored on executed actions rather than demonstrated market traction.
Framing outruns the numbers
The 'clearing bad bets before the new CEO' storyline is heavier than the underlying facts: the cuts are about 0.12 percent of headcount, the succession motive is the publisher's own inference rather than a sourced statement, and the Vision Pro 'poorly selling' and Siri 'struggling' judgments arrive without sales or usage figures. Fortune does moderate itself by explicitly calling the cuts 'tiny in relation to the overall company', and the Amazon pricing item is precisely quantified, so the overstatement is modest rather than severe.
Both companies framing their own costs
The two corporate voices in the cluster are speaking in their own interest. Apple recasts a layoff as realignment to 'evolve' the business and stresses that new roles will be created while only a 'limited number' of existing roles are affected — language that softens a cut landing days before a CEO transition. Amazon attributes across-the-board price increases to memory and storage component costs it 'absorbed for as long as we could', shifting responsibility to the supply chain. The publisher also has an incentive to bundle two loosely related items into a single narrative hook, and the Apple facts originate with a competing outlet whose scoop is being summarized.
Moderate-low
Single publisher, single source item, and the load-bearing Apple facts are second-hand from Bloomberg, so there is no cross-outlet check on the 200 figure or the team closures. Confidence is lifted somewhat by an on-record Apple statement, an on-record Amazon statement, and exact prices verified by the publisher's own review, and lowered by the absence of any quantitative support for the Vision Pro, Siri and Google-partnership elements that give the story its meaning.
