Apple shares rise 2.2% on a reported home hub that recognizes each user by face or voice

The two refreshed products show where Apple spent its effort. According to Bloomberg, the HomePod mini and the TV box keep their current designs, the mini gets new colors, and both get faster processors to run the AI models behind Siri ^[6]. That is a light refresh for a speaker that has gone about six years without an update and a set-top box that has gone about four ^[18]. All three products are there to show off Siri AI, Apple's revamped assistant ^[7]. The hub's main feature is assistant work too. It pulls up one person's messages, calendar and notes, answers from them, and switches when a different face or voice appears ^[2][4].

The reports do not include a price, a ship date or the names of any lock and thermostat makers the hub will work with. That leaves three readings. Set close to what Amazon and Google charge for their home devices, the hub is a volume bid for counter and wall space, the challenge to their dominance that Proactive Investors described ^[8]. Set well above them, it is a screen for households already using Apple's software. In that case the return comes through Siri AI use and the HomeKit ecosystem Apple is building around the hub ^[9]. The third case is that Siri AI disappoints when Apple shows it on Oct. 13 ^[1], and Apple is left with a well-equipped screen attached to a weak assistant.

For the companies that make thermostats and door locks, the reported hub is one more controller for their products ^[3]. In my view, on the current spec, that is a new sales route for them more than a threat. Competition for them, if it comes, is further out. Bloomberg said Apple is also developing a privacy-focused home sensor and a 9-inch hub with a robotic arm that rotates the display 360 degrees ^[10]. The sensor would be a connected device Apple makes itself ^[10].

Ternus took over as chief executive on Sept. 1 and previewed an iPhone launch for the following week ^[16]. Oct. 13 falls about five weeks after that ^[19]. It is still an autumn date, so it says little yet about the less seasonal calendar he wants ^[11]. Proactive Investors called the home push one of the first major product expansions under him ^[12]. In his first comments to employees, Ternus said what lies beyond the iPhone launch includes "incredible products already in the works and the ones we haven't even imagined yet that we'll dream up and create together" ^[17].

I think the hub is mainly a way to put Siri AI on a shared screen in the home. New processors in two unchanged designs, and a new device built around the assistant, point that way ^[6][7]. The counter-thesis is that Apple wants to beat Amazon and Google on units ^[8]. A launch price close to theirs, or a long list of named lock and thermostat partners on Oct. 13, would show Apple is after volume and prove this view wrong.
