Apple hands Ternus the products and keeps Brussels with Cook

The brief attached to Cook's new title is where the useful reading is. Apple has more open regulatory fronts in Europe than anywhere else, and the executive handling them does not change on 1 September ^[14]. Cook met the EU tech chief in Brussels in July, in talks described afterwards as constructive ^[11], while Apple's Siri AI features stayed blocked in Europe under the Digital Markets Act ^[12]. Those talks produced no resolution ^[13]. Leaving that with the chairman means Ternus inherits the product organisation without the file that is currently costing it a shipped feature in a market Apple cannot walk away from.

The party landed a day before Cook's 15th anniversary in the job ^[5]. No outlet has reported an outside industry figure taking the microphone, and every reported speaker was a current or former Apple executive or family ^[1], which puts the reported speaking list at zero out of four outsiders ^[8]. Insiders told The Information that continuity is the point and that they expect few things to change ^[19]. Aaron Tilley reported the evening for The Information, citing someone who was there ^[4].

The most repeated detail of the night points the same way. Cook acknowledged a partner in front of the room and used his first name, Mike ^[7], having come out publicly in 2014 and said little about his private life since ^[9]. What changed was the register, in a room he treated as internal, which is what the room was.

What Ternus owns from week one is price. Cook said in June that Apple would raise prices because of the memory chip shortage ^[21], and this week's Mac refresh, in all likelihood Cook's last product as chief executive, arrived with higher starting prices than the models it replaced ^[22]. Ternus's first major outing is the September iPhone event, where he presents a phone developed entirely under his predecessor ^[17]. The component decision was taken upstream of him; the stage is his.

The one change he has named is narrow. He has said he intends to build on the film run, and he has promised to rebuild a design studio that lost its Ive-era designers ^[18]. That is pipeline repair rather than reorganisation, and it tells you which side of the building he comes from. Ternus joined in 2001 and has led hardware engineering since 2021 ^[15], meaning 20 years inside the company before he got that job ^[24], and he arrives from engineering rather than operations, where Cook spent his own career before taking over ^[16]. Morgan Chittum framed the succession for CNBC around three pressing challenges facing Cook's successor ^[23]. Sunday's answer to them looks like a division of labour: the engineer takes the products, and the man who negotiated Brussels keeps Brussels.
