The number in circulation is storage, a measure of volume. What injures people downstream is the rate at which that storage drains, and nobody has published a peak discharge for the reach where crews are working. Satellite imagery shown by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV appears to indicate that the newly formed lake is in the same area as Wednesday's glacial detachment event, which set off the chain of events leading to catastrophic damage downstream.
CCTV reported Friday morning that the lake's barrier was more than 10 kilometres (6 miles) from Gyirong Port, the border crossing with Nepal that was engulfed by mud and floodwater.

A lake that has begun to outflow, glacial melt still running under high temperatures and debris shifting on the river path all make this a snapshot, and with a single wire report behind it there is no second observation to catch a figure that turns out to be wrong.
