With Compliant, pubX builds ad agents for both sides of the same media buy

pubX raised $5 million and bought Compliant, an advertiser-side quality tool, so its agents can work both sides of an ad buy. The first live test is a Mucinex buy that Reckitt's traders approve at key stages, enough to show the workflow but short of proof that brands will keep spending through it.

What happened

  • pubX's buyer agents and seller agents are meant to talk to each other directly, bounded by the client's brief, the publisher's choices and agreed commercial rules.
  • Compliant keeps its name as a pubX company, and its CEO Jamie Barnard becomes pubX's President, Global Demand Growth.
  • On October 7 pubX planned a live agent-to-agent buy for Reckitt's Mucinex at a private Advertising Week New York lunch, with Paradium.AI and USA TODAY Co among the accepting publishers.
  • The release did not disclose pubX's valuation, its total funding or what it paid for Compliant.

Why it matters

  • decision Brands now have to decide whether quality scores from a company owned by a sell-side vendor with thousands of publisher sites are an independent enough check on what their buyer agent purchases.
  • constraint Because Reckitt's traders sign off at key stages, a clean Mucinex run shows the human-to-agent handoffs work and leaves open how the agents behave with fewer checkpoints.
  • constraint If pubX's agents sit on both sides of a trade, the trade tests pubX against itself; the AdCP case needs another vendor's agent to finish a campaign with pubX's.

pubX has described its control model in enough detail to review. Its agents are meant to carry a campaign from brief and planning through buying, selling and reporting [7]. The client sets how much autonomy they get and approves plans at key points, and pubX says each decision is traceable and auditable [8]. Put plainly, it is a pipeline with human checkpoints and an audit log. I think the gated design is the right call for a first product. A brand's trading desk will want the log before it raises the autonomy setting.

Compliant supplies the buyer's half of the rules. Its Data Integrity and CTV Quality Indexes are meant to feed signals on media quality and governance into the agents' decisions [9]. As RuntimeWire puts it, an advertiser delegating a media budget needs a way to constrain and review automated decisions [21]. Compliant's work has centred on advertisers' concerns about the quality and governance of the media they buy [22]. His industry biography says Barnard co-founded it after almost 16 years at Unilever, where his roles included general counsel for global marketing and media [11].

The founders know this ground already. Andrew Mole and Alex Rosen spent much of their careers building buy-side ad technology, pubX wrote in a 2022 account of the company [12]. pubX itself began by helping publishers price and sell inventory [13], and says it now serves thousands of websites [3]. The new money goes to buyer and seller agents on the open Ad Context Protocol, the Compliant integration, US expansion, and work with brands and agencies [6].

AdCP is meant to let agents discover, plan, buy and measure media through shared protocols [14]. RuntimeWire, which reported the deal, cautions that a protocol supplies common rules but does not establish that independent agents can reliably complete valuable campaigns at scale [15]. It puts the hard work in interoperating while keeping each participant's controls, data and commercial terms intact [16]. For a demo to transfer to production, a seller agent has to honour quality rules it did not write. A buyer agent has to accept publisher terms it cannot edit.

The Mucinex buy is the first public run of the gated design. Reckitt's trading team was scheduled to approve the plan at key stages [18]. A private lunch at Advertising Week New York is about as controlled as a live market gets [17]. The release did not include campaign economics or confirm the buy had completed when it went out [19]. RuntimeWire sets the bar at repeat buying and campaign results [20].

What to watch

  • pubX confirming the Mucinex buy completed, with spend, delivery or quality results attached.
  • A second brand, or a second Reckitt campaign, booked through pubX's agents after Advertising Week.
