Papertrade's pool sat just $1.15M above the line where it starts minting PAPER

Papertrade, a 1,000x perpetuals venue on HyperEVM, faces an unconfirmed oracle manipulation allegation with about $3.15M in the pool that pays winners. Below $2M it mints PAPER for each dollar lost, so a nudged price or a winning streak lands on token holders.

A winning streak could dilute PAPER holders below $2M How Papertrade's shared winners' pool, the Martingaler LP, reaches each group as trader wins and losses move its balance.

The Martingaler LP held about $3.15M after launch to pay winners. Profits it cannot pay are queued until more losses flow in. Below a $2M balance, 100 PAPER is issued per $1 lost, diluting holders. Traders out-winning losers could drain the pool and leave stakers facing dilution.

What happened

  • Papertrade's winners' pool started with zero funds, and profits it cannot pay wait in a queue until fresh trader losses arrive.
  • Every position on the venue is priced off one number, the mid-price between the best bid and offer on Hyperliquid.
  • Trading opened on HyperEVM around October 10, 2026, with more than $137M pre-deposited from over 11,000 addresses.
  • PAPER stakers collected more than $10M in USDC in the opening hours, all of it sourced from trader losses.

Why it matters

  • exposure Once winners outrun losers for long enough, stakers stop earning yield and start absorbing dilution, so PAPER's opening payouts say little about what holding it returns later.
  • constraint With one venue's mid-price as the only input, Papertrade has no second source to reject a brief bad print before it moves every open position at once.
  • decision Traders have to treat a profitable position as a claim on future losers, because a payout queue sits between a paper gain and cash in hand.

The pool held roughly $3.15M shortly after launch [2], so winners could draw about $1.15M out of it before issuance begins at the $2M line [15]. Below that line, each dollar lost becomes 100 new PAPER [6]. A $1M shortfall would mean 100 million new tokens [16]. Crypto Briefing did not report PAPER's total supply, so that dilution cannot yet be stated as a share of the float.

Leverage sets how quickly the $1.15M goes. At 1,000x [3], a 0.1% price move equals a trader's entire margin [17]. Bitcoin open interest passed $3B soon after launch [9], and 0.1% of $3B is $3M, about 95% of the pool's balance [18]. Winners are paid only out of losers' money [4]. That means the pool's share of any move depends on how far longs and shorts offset each other, or more exactly, how far they offset at the instant the price is read. The price is read from a single venue's mid-quote [11].

According to The Defiant, as cited by Crypto Briefing, Papertrade faces an oracle manipulation allegation, and the claim has not been confirmed [1]. Crypto Briefing added that wider discussion of oracle attacks has drawn on unrelated DeFi incidents [13]. We think the solvency question stands whichever way the allegation resolves. A nudged feed is the fast way to drain the pool. A stretch in which traders honestly win more than they lose gets there more slowly, queuing unpaid profits and, once the balance is below $2M, triggering the same issuance [14].

The case against this view is the size of the opening losses. PaperDash's estimate of $18M to $28M in net realized trader losses over the first few days [10] describes a crowd that, so far, pays the house. If losers keep arriving at that rate, the pool refills faster than a brief mispricing could empty it, the queue stays short and stakers keep collecting. If the allegation is confirmed, what decides how close the pool came to the line is the size of any payouts made against bad prints.

Where the losses went matters as much as how big they were. The $10M-plus paid to stakers in the opening hours [12] was more than three times the pool's $3.15M [19]. In our view each dollar of losses paid out as staker yield is a dollar the pool cannot later hand to a winner. The pool started at zero [5] and held about 3% of the roughly $102M locked on the platform [20].

What to watch

  • Whether The Defiant, Papertrade or on-chain analysts publish evidence that confirms or rebuts the oracle manipulation allegation.
  • PaperDash readings of the Martingaler LP balance against the $2M issuance trigger, and the size of the unpaid-profit queue.
  • Any change to Papertrade's pricing input beyond Hyperliquid's BBO mid-price, or any cut to the 1,000x leverage cap.
