Overdrive's PS5 store was down about a day after Sony's reported cease-and-desist
Two GitHub repositories revived the Overdrive PS5 game store within about a day of its reported takedown by Sony. Neither Sony nor the developer has confirmed the notice, TechSpot reported.

Three figures. One fork repository has expanded to more than 1,800 titles, TechSpot reported; this is unconfirmed. The original Overdrive store listed more than 1,600 free games while online. Two GitHub repositories took its place after one day of downtime.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| One fork's catalog, more than (per TechSpot) | 1,800 titles | Unconfirmed | 16 |
| Original store, more than | 1,600 free games | 2 | |
| Downtime before revival | 1 day | 4 |
What happened
- Overdrive listed more than 1,600 free PS4 and PS5 games for jailbroken PS5 consoles, including AAA and indie titles.
- Sony's legal team reportedly sent the developer a cease-and-desist a couple of days after Edigax's post, and the original GitHub project appears to be gone for good.
- At least one of the replacement repositories has already grown to more than 1,800 titles, TechSpot reported.
- Overdrive depends on Relapse, a WebKit-plus-kernel exploit chain that works on PS5 and PS5 Pro firmware 7.00 through 13.60.
Why it matters
- constraint Each fork is its own repository, so enforcement turns into a separate notice per fork, and the original developer's compliance covers only the original.
- decision Sony can keep sending notices one repository at a time or lean on its firmware 14.00 fix, which protects only the consoles whose owners install it.
- precedent Overdrive's styling is being merged into Omega Dashboard PS5 and PS5-Suite, which bundle file managers and hardware tools, so a later notice would have to reach projects with other uses.
The report of the notice comes from an X post by Oliver Darko, according to Tom's Hardware. It adds that there are no concrete sources for the letter [14]. The two outlets also differ on the run-up. TechSpot dates Edigax's post to October 11 and reports nearly 10 million views [10]. Tom's Hardware dates the video to October 12 and reports over 7.9 million [11].
Overdrive is a front end. It lists games, and the console fetches them from third-party file hosts [2]. The forks host no pirated content either. They reuse the same client-side code to map external server databases [6]. A notice to the developer covers the developer's repository. Neither outlet reports a notice to the forks or to the file hosts.
Overdrive is also one app among many on the same exploit. Relapse was released on September 29 [5]. Tom's Hardware lists emulators, launchers, streaming apps and a native Xbox Cloud Gaming client among the homebrew that followed [18]. Overdrive went up on GitHub on October 9 [1], ten days after Relapse [9]. A notice about one of those apps does not change what Relapse can run.
TechSpot says forks appeared within hours of the shutdown [3]. Tom's Hardware counts one day of downtime before two repositories took the store's place [4]. Tom's Hardware also expects Sony never to get rid of the problem for good. Its reasoning is that the jailbreak community wants to preserve the library and treats it as a protest against Sony's business practices [19]. TechSpot adds that many users who moved to the forks are critical of Sony's plan to stop releasing new PS5 games on physical media starting in 2028 [15].
A larger catalog is not a working one. Early adopters of the original reported that many links pulled from file hosts were broken or offered terrible download speeds [20]. In our view the supportable claim is narrow: the storefront's front end came back within a day of a reported notice.
What to watch
- Whether Sony or GitHub serves notices on the forks, or on the file-hosting platforms the catalog points to.
- Whether Sony or the developer ever confirms the cease-and-desist that so far traces to an X post.
- Whether a Relapse update or workaround appears for firmware 14.00 and later.

While online, Overdrive built a catalog of more than 1,600 free PS4 and PS5 games for jailbroken PS5 consoles, pulling AAA and indie titles directly from third-party file-hosting platforms.
- [3]
Within hours of Overdrive going dark, several forks and cloned repositories appeared online, reinstating multiple versions of the store under new hosts; at least two GitHub repositories appeared in less than a day.
- [4]
Two GitHub repositories took Overdrive's place after one day of downtime; one is a fork of the original and the other is a clone under a different account.
- [5]
The Relapse jailbreak was released on September 29.
- [6]
Like the original, the Overdrive forks do not host any pirated content but use the same client-side code to map out external server databases.
- [7]
Overdrive runs on consoles jailbroken with Relapse, an exploit chain that pairs a WebKit browser bug with a kernel flaw and allows homebrew execution on PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles running firmware 7.00 through 13.60.
- [8]
Sony has already closed the security hole that Relapse uses in firmware 14.00.
- [9]
Overdrive was published on GitHub ten days after Relapse was released.
- [10]
Edigax, a well-known PS5 modder, posted about Overdrive two days after its October 9 release, on October 11; the post drew nearly 10 million views and more than 600 comments.
- [11]
Edigax's video on Overdrive's installation was posted on October 12 and received over 7.9 million views with over 600 comments.
- [12]
Sony's legal team reportedly sent the Overdrive developer a cease-and-desist notice a couple of days after Edigax's post, forcing a shutdown without warning, and the original GitHub project appears to have been removed for good.
- [13]
Neither the Overdrive developer nor Sony has publicly confirmed the legal notice.
- [14]
Overdrive was shut down reportedly after the developer received a cease-and-desist letter, as stated in an X post by Oliver Darko; there are no concrete sources for this cease-and-desist.
- [15]
Many who embraced Overdrive and moved to the forks seem critical of Sony's plan to stop releasing new PS5 games on physical media starting in 2028.
- [16]
At least one of the new Overdrive fork repositories has already expanded to more than 1,800 titles.
- [17]
Fork maintainers are reportedly merging Overdrive's styling into existing homebrew projects such as Omega Dashboard PS5 and PS5-Suite, which integrate custom game stores with file managers and hardware tools.
- [18]
Since the Relapse release, an influx of homebrew apps has been developed, including a range of emulators, launchers and streaming apps; even Xbox Cloud Gaming runs natively on the PS5.
- [19]
The jailbreak community seems keen to preserve the homebrew because of its library and as a protest against Sony's business practices, making it unlikely that Sony will ever get rid of this problem for good.
- [20]
Early adopters noted that many of the links Overdrive pulled from file hosts were either broken or offered terrible download speeds.
