Sony's Sorkin sequel needs six times its opening weekend to cover a $30 million budget

Sony's "The Social Reckoning" opened to about $5 million in 2,606 theaters, under a quarter of the roughly $22 million "The Social Network" made in 2010. Fortune attributes the weak start to a story audiences already know, and the film cost a reported $30 million to make.

What happened

  • The Numbers' figure came in under the $5.5 million estimate that was reported on Sunday.
  • Critics are lukewarm: the film holds a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- CinemaScore.
  • David Fincher directed the original; Sorkin, who wrote both films, directed this one himself.
  • Sony's ad campaign promised that Zuckerberg would love the film, ends on a jab about Instagram not fact-checking most ads, and runs on Meta's own platforms.

Why it matters

  • exposure Sony and Alcon carry the reported $30 million production cost plus a full-fledged marketing campaign on top, so the amount they need to recover is above $30 million.
  • contradiction Fortune says $5 million would not be a disaster for a political drama, then calls the $30 million budget generous for one. The budget, not the opening, turns a modest start into a problem.
  • precedent Sony timed its teaser to the day Meta settled a child-safety case for up to $17.1 billion, so the opening is one data point on whether news-cycle timing sells tickets for a talk-heavy drama.

The $5 million works out to about $1,900 in each of the 2,606 theaters [15], with Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong leading the cast [5]. A better test than the per-screen average is the ratio of final worldwide gross to opening weekend.

"The Social Network" opened to roughly $22 million [4] and went on to gross $225 million worldwide [7], a multiple of 10.2 [17]. Apply that multiple to $5 million and the sequel finishes near $51 million [18]. A multiple of 6.0 returns exactly the reported $30 million production cost [d3, c6], and anything lower leaves the film short of it. We'd put the weight on the lower outcomes (or rather, on a multiple somewhere between 6 and 10). That clears production and still leaves a marketing campaign to pay for [14]. The original's multiple had an awards run behind it [7], and the sequel's reviews are already in [8].

Fortune's explanation for the shortfall is familiarity. The film dramatizes 2019 to 2021, when Frances Haugen gave tens of thousands of internal documents to The Wall Street Journal [10]. She testified before a Senate subcommittee in October 2021, and Zuckerberg has been questioned by Congress repeatedly [11]. Anyone who followed the news at the turn of the decade, Fortune wrote, already knows the story [20]. Fortune also says the underperformance goes beyond artistic differences and reflects changes in culture, politics and moviegoers' tastes [21].

This rests on one weekend from one source, since Fortune cites The Numbers for the $5 million [2]. What would prove the lean wrong is a second weekend that falls only modestly from $5 million, which would put the 10.2 case back in play. The report covers one weekend and does not include international receipts.

What to watch

  • The second-weekend domestic gross against the $5 million opening, which sets whether the film tracks toward a 6x or a 10x multiple.
  • Cumulative worldwide gross against $30 million (the 6x line) and $51 million (the original's multiple applied).
  • Any disclosure from Sony or Alcon of the marketing spend, which would move the break-even above the production cost.
