A stuck aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro costs a whole camera assembly
iFixit says a stuck aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro likely takes a new main camera assembly, and it points at the phone's improved cooling to explain the display frames that cracked on three of the four units it opened.

What happened
- iFixit's iPhone 18 Pro teardown shows the variable aperture's six tiny blades moved by electromagnets, working independently of the optical image stabilization system that uses the same approach.

Why it matters

iFixit credits this design with modular camera assemblies, carried over from last year's Pro [12]. At the repair counter, that modularity also has a price. The module is the smallest thing a technician can order, so one misbehaving blade is billed as the whole optical stack [3]. 9to5Mac's report on the teardown does not include a price for that assembly [14].
iFixit's suspicion about the cracked frames falls on the cooling. It suggests the improved thermal system may be drawing heat away from the display while the heating pad tries to soften the adhesive [7]. Apple said the new vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro, and that the A20 Pro's package puts the silicon die side by side with the memory so the chip connects directly to the chamber [8][9]. A better heat spreader under a heating pad is a plausible route to a technician pulling on adhesive that never softened.
The sample is four phones, and one of them came out with its frame intact [1]. The consequence shows up after reassembly. iFixit says a cracked frame means the display may no longer sit perfectly flush, and could compromise the phone's water resistance [10].
The people who answer for that are the shop that quoted a screen replacement and now has to explain a water-resistance caveat, and whoever signs off on out-of-warranty camera repairs for a fleet of handsets.
What sorts the work for both of them is whether the failing part is its own module, and whether the job requires going in through the display [12]. The aperture is modular and behind the display, and it is the expensive one, because the part number covers far more than the fault [3]. The USB-C port is worse: iFixit says replacing it requires removing much of the phone's internals [11]. The battery is the easy case by comparison, sitting in a glue-free tray once the display is off [12].
What to watch
- Whether iFixit's provisional 7 out of 10 holds once parts arrive and a main camera assembly can be priced.
- Whether independent shops report display frame cracking at anything near the rate iFixit saw once volume repairs begin.
