Hurricane Lala passed near South Point on the Big Island on Saturday afternoon without making landfall, and by 11 p.m. local time the National Hurricane Center said the storm appeared to have peaked and was pulling away [1][5]. It peaked as a Category 1 with winds up to 75 mph, a number that described very little of what operators actually had to manage [4].
What they had to manage was water and terrain. The NHC projected a maximum storm total of 30 to 35 inches over the windward Big Island [8], roughly 2.5 to 2.9 feet of rain [2], and warned of "heavy rainfall, with life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain" over the Big Island and Maui overnight into early Sunday [9]. Wind followed the same logic: the center said damaging winds would persist across portions of the Big Island overnight, "with the strongest winds expected in areas of higher terrain" [2]. Landfall is a coastline event. Orographic rainfall and ridge-line gusts are not, which is why a storm that stayed offshore still produced the full inland hazard set.
The warning footprint makes the point in one line. A tropical storm warning covered the seven other major islands: Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau [7]. With the Big Island under hurricane-driven warnings of its own, that is all eight major islands carrying an active hazard from a single Category 1 system [1]. The NHC said the heavy rain and flood risk would spread westward across the chain on Sunday [10], so the exposure was sequential rather than simultaneous, which is harder to staff, not easier. Coastal risk was separate again: large and dangerous waves at the coast [3] and swells building through the weekend with likely life-threatening surf and rip current conditions [12].
The grid moved before the peak. More than 20,000 customers were reported without power on Saturday afternoon, with damaging winds and heavy rain spreading across the Big Island [11], which is to say the outage count was already five figures before the overnight terrain winds the NHC had flagged. Governor Josh Green called it "a serious storm" and proclaimed a state of emergency so the state and counties would have resources to clear debris and secure infrastructure [13]. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said Friday his administration had spent days preparing [14]. The state's emergency management agency stuck to drainage and debris advice: clear gutters and drains, move valuables off the ground, seal door gaps, remove threatening tree limbs [21].
For scale, Hawaii's last "major" hurricane, defined as Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, was Iniki in 1992, which killed at least six people and caused billions in damage [15], about 34 years ago [3]. Lala does not belong in that class by wind. That is precisely the limit of the category scale as a planning input.

What is missing is the second half of the curve - no restoration progress, evacuation or shelter counts, or post-passage damage assessment - so the observed footprint is a single Saturday-afternoon snapshot.
Category framing understates the actual exposure
The dispatch does not oversell: alarming language is quoted from officials, the storm is correctly described as peaked, non-landfalling and weakening, and the emergency response is documented rather than dramatized. If anything the headline instrument understates risk - a Category 1 wind rating carries none of the 30-35 inch rainfall, mudslide, terrain-wind or life-threatening surf exposure that occupies most of the text, and warnings covered all eight islands rather than the one the category described. The small negative reflects that mismatch, tempered by the fact that the worst outcomes remained forecasts at publication.
Low commercial incentive, mild precautionary bias
The material is a wire-service dispatch republished by a science aggregator with no product, vendor or funding interest in the outcome, and the substantive claims come from public agencies. The residual distortion is structural: emergency managers and elected officials have a legitimate interest in maximal precaution, so quoted language leans toward worst-case ('life-threatening', 'serious storm'), and the El Nino and climate-amplification section broadens the story's stakes without any Lala-specific attribution analysis.
