HomePod Mini 2 offers a narrower Siri AI to households whose iPhones lack Apple Intelligence
Apple's HomePod Mini 2, its first refresh in six years, offers Siri AI with or without an Apple Intelligence iPhone, ZDNet reports. The S10 chip inside comes from the Apple Watch, and what the assistant can do still depends on the paired phone.
The Product Desk

With an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad, the speaker can connect to up to six compatible devices and reach Messages, Calendar and Reminders. Without Apple Intelligence, Siri AI offers general conversation and music discovery. Siri AI also works with no connected Apple device.

What happened
- With an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad, the speaker can connect to up to six devices and reach Messages, Calendar and Reminders.
- Wi-Fi moves from 802.11n to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth from version 5 to version 6.
- With the new Apple TV 4K, up to four of the speakers can be set up as a surround sound system.
- An LED lighting feature is added to complement the speaker's audio output.
Why it matters
- decision The first purchase decision is the household's phones. Whether they support Apple Intelligence decides if the speaker reads personal apps or only converses.
- constraint The Wi-Fi 6E gains depend on other gear. ZDNet says lower latency and better security hold only if the devices the speaker talks to also support 6E.
- cost Four-speaker surround takes two more units than the two-speaker stereo pair older tvOS allowed, and the household pays for each one.
- capability Two Mini 2 units can serve as a Mac's left and right channels, a use for buyers who do not want a four-speaker room.
Take a kitchen with one HomePod Mini 2 and a household iPhone that does not support Apple Intelligence. According to ZDNet, the speaker still handles general conversation with deeper knowledge, and it finds music from conversational prompts [4]. The reach into Messages, Calendar and Reminders is a separate path that needs a supported device [5].
So one name covers two depths of Siri AI [3]. The pitch is that Siri AI comes home. What ZDNet describes is a speaker whose usefulness changes with the phone paired to it. Whoever sets one up on Monday will be asked on Friday why it cannot read a particular person's calendar, and the answer is that person's phone [5]. Apple says the S10 inside is the chip used in the Apple Watch Series 10 and Series 11 [2].
Much of the older Mini's job carries over. It is still a hub for HomeKit devices and still offers Sound Recognition [10].
The evidence is thin on the questions a buyer asks first. ZDNet relays Apple's feature list. The piece includes no price, ship date or usage data. It calls the Mini 2 Apple's smallest home speaker [13], so "entry point" holds for size, and whether it is the cheapest way into Siri AI depends on a price the piece does not state. ZDNet writes that Wi-Fi 6E gives "zero interference from older household electronics" [15]. That applies on a 6 GHz band that only 6E-compatible devices can use [11].
Two checks sort the purchase: whether an iPhone or iPad in the home supports Apple Intelligence, and whether the home has the new Apple TV 4K.
- Supported device, new Apple TV 4K: both halves apply, contextual Siri AI [5] and up to four speakers in surround [7]. - Supported device, no new Apple TV 4K: the buy is the assistant alone [5]. - No supported device, new Apple TV 4K: the buy is the speaker array [7], with Siri AI limited to conversation and music [4]. - Neither: the main change is connectivity [6], and ZDNet says its latency and security gains need 6E on the other devices too [16].
In either second-row case, we'd start with one unit and judge it on the phones the household actually owns. The cost is that surround, which needs four units, waits.
What to watch
- Apple's own pricing page and ship date for the HomePod Mini 2, which ZDNet's piece does not include.
- Apple's support documentation on which iPhones and iPads count as Apple Intelligence-compatible for the speaker's contextual mode.
- Hands-on reports of the four-speaker setup with the new Apple TV 4K, which ZDNet describes but does not test.
