Google opens Gemini 4 Argon to AI Pro subscribers and keeps Antigravity's own apps on Ultra
Google is rolling out Gemini 4 Argon to AI Pro subscribers in the Gemini app, where it was Ultra-only. Antigravity's own desktop app and CLI still require Ultra, 9to5Google reported.
The Product Desk
Argon's Gemini API input price is $2 per million input tokens at the introductory rate until November 30, 2026, and $4 per million input tokens afterward. Output tokens go from $10 to $20 per million.
| Measure | Value | As of | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intro, to Nov 30, 2026 | $2 per 1M input | 6 | |
| After Nov 30, 2026 | $4 per 1M input | 6 |
What happened
- The Gemini app for macOS gets direct access to Antigravity's agentic coding interface, for building apps and web experiences.
- A new toggle in the main chat window switches from chat to tasks, the mode previously called Spark.
- Before the public rollout, Google gave Argon to a select set of "trusted cyber defenders" to test for risks, The Verge reported.
Why it matters
- cost Each developer who needs Antigravity's desktop app, CLI, AI Studio or Android Studio (Canary) for Argon moves to a plan that starts at $99.99.
- contradiction 9to5Google relays Google saying emoji rendering was nearly 45% of YouTube comment server overhead, while Ars Technica says removing it cut server load by 45 percent, so the same example is worded two ways.
- constraint The Verge reported it is not clear when or if Plus or free users get Argon, so seats below Pro cannot be planned against a date.
A developer on a Pro plan opens the Gemini app on a Mac and finds four models in the picker: 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.8 Flash, 3.1 Pro and 4 Argon [3]. The same developer then opens the Antigravity desktop app to try the workflow Google has been showing off, and the new model asks for Ultra [4].
The easy summary is that Pro now has Argon for coding. The access list supports less. Pro and Ultra both get Argon in the Gemini app [1], and the Mac app adds Antigravity's coding interface, which Google describes as letting users "switch between chatting and coding" [17]. 9to5Google's report does not say whether that interface runs Argon for Pro subscribers. It does say that Argon in the Antigravity desktop app and CLI requires Ultra [4].
Google's own examples sit on the Ultra side of that line. The company said it produced them with its internal version of Antigravity [13]. In the Chrome case, Google says Argon helped separate core webpage handling from a roughly 6 million line legacy folder inside Chromium's 40 million-line codebase, "completing months of work in weeks" [15]. For Gemma, Google reports a 2.85x speedup on an A100 via vLLM, from about 37,900 to over 108,000 tokens per second [14]. Google's benchmark claims against GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 are also its own [8]. Ars Technica wrote that nothing about the model's capabilities has changed with this rollout [9].
The API is metered, so it follows different rules from seats. Argon costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until November 30, 2026, then $4 and $20 [6]. That is a doubling on both [18]. The Verge put the introductory price at around a fifth of what OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Fable 5 models cost, and said Argon stays significantly cheaper after the increase. It added that models use different numbers of tokens for the same task, so a per-token price does not settle the cost [16]. A team that measures cost per task before November 30 should double the result before it goes into a budget [18].
We'd start every candidate task on Pro and move it up only when the task forces it. Sort each task on two axes: whether it fits in a chat with the files attached or needs the whole repo, and whether it is a one-off or will recur. A chat-sized one-off is a Pro task today, in the Gemini app. A chat-sized task that will recur belongs in an API cost test at the post-November rate. For a repo-sized one-off, buy one Ultra seat for one person with an end date, since Ultra is what the Antigravity desktop app, CLI, AI Studio and Android Studio (Canary) require [c6, c7]. Repo-sized recurring work comes last, after a one-off has produced a result the team would accept in review. The tradeoff is that a Pro trial leaves the Antigravity desktop app and CLI untested, and Antigravity is where Google's examples were produced [13].
What to watch
- Whether Google lifts the Ultra requirement for Argon in the Antigravity desktop app and CLI, which would let Pro teams run the workflow behind its examples.
- Whether Google gives Plus or free users a date for Argon, which The Verge said is unclear.
- Whether the doubled API rates after November 30, 2026 change the cost-per-task comparison with GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5 that The Verge flagged.

Nothing about Gemini 4 Argon's capabilities has changed; Google still points to the benchmarks it published late last month.

The public rollout of Argon follows a limited release to a select set of 'trusted cyber defenders' to be tested for potential risks.

Users of the Gemini app for macOS will have direct access to Antigravity's agentic coding interface in the consumer client for building apps, web experiences, and more.

A new toggle in the main chat window of the Gemini app lets users switch from chat to tasks (previously Spark).

Google shared examples of how it has been using Argon with its internal version of Antigravity across Chrome, Gemma, YouTube, and more.

Google says that using Argon it achieved a 2.85x end-to-end inference speedup on an A100 via vLLM, accelerating throughput from about 37,900 to over 108,000 tokens per second on Gemma 4 E2B, with 100% token parity.

Google says Argon helped the Chrome team separate core webpage handling from a ~6 million line legacy folder of browser features within Chromium's 40 million-line codebase, finishing an architectural refactor across hundreds of files, 'completing months of work in weeks'.
- [16]
The introductory API price is around a fifth the cost of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Fable 5 models; even after the costs double at the end of November Argon will still be significantly cheaper per token, though this does not necessarily mean lower costs in practice because models can use different numbers of tokens for the same tasks.

Argon's API price doubles on both input and output after November 30, 2026: 4/2 = 2 and 20/10 = 2.
- [19]
Google says Argon in Antigravity helped cut the CPU footprint of YouTube's comments frontend in half, and identified that redundant emoji rendering alone accounted for nearly 45% of server overhead.
