The iPhone 18 Pro Max that still arrives on launch day costs $2,499
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders and its first foldable sit five weeks apart. Anyone buying handsets in quantity now has two ordering windows to choose between, and the larger phone is already the constrained one.

Why it matters

The Pro Max tier that 9to5Mac still found delivering on September 18 in every color is the 2TB one [4]. At Apple's US prices that is $2,499 against a $1,299 base, a difference of $1,200 [5][1]. Other Pro Max configurations had moved into October by Saturday evening, while the smaller Pro was available for launch-day delivery in nearly all configurations [3].
The temptation at 5 a.m. is to settle the color question in the basket. MacRumors' guide warns that every change likely re-queries Apple's inventory, color included, and advises taking the saved configuration straight through to payment [10]. The same guide says pickup stock is probably allocated separately from delivery stock, and per store rather than nationally, so a pickup slot can survive after a delivery estimate has gone [11].
Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, does not open for pre-order until October 16 and is set to ship October 23 [6]. Counting from Saturday, the two pre-order dates are 34 days apart and the two ship dates 35 [2][3]. 9to5Mac wrote that "Some iPhone buyers are likely waiting for that before placing an order" [7]. MacRumors' Pro guide sends foldable shoppers to a separate guide and otherwise treats the morning as the usual annual rush [20]. Neither publication's pre-order coverage gets to the foldable; it is about checkout [7].
For a buyer who needs unlocked handsets, the retail options thinned early. According to The Verge, at the start of pre-orders the only unlocked Pro and Pro Max came direct from Apple, with Best Buy and Walmart listing carrier-locked versions [12]. Apple's own financing is 36 monthly payments at zero percent APR [16], and its trade-in credit tops out at $885 [15]. Against the $1,199 Pro, that leaves $314 to pay [5].
The carrier offers come with a three-year tail. Verizon's Simplicity Pro plan comes to $80 a month for a switcher and includes a free iPhone 18 Pro through monthly bill credits, and The Verge says collecting the full value takes three years with the carrier [13]. Thirty-six months at $80 is $2,880 of service [4]. AT&T covers an iPhone 18 Pro over 36 months of billing credits for anyone trading in an iPhone 14 or newer on its Extra plan, with $99 out of pocket to move up to the Pro Max [14].
One timing detail is easy to get wrong when several devices are involved. Apple's trade-in estimate holds if it receives the old device within 14 days, 15 in Canada, and that countdown starts when the new phone arrives, not when the order goes in [8].
What settles the September-or-October question before October 16 is whether anyone has to be holding a working new phone before October 23. If not, the October window delivers the same phone. The other question is whether the requirement is a named configuration or simply a current phone, because on the larger phone the September window has already stopped offering a free choice of storage [3][4].
What to watch
