Gurman's newsletter turns Apple's one foldable into a four-name lineup
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman expects Apple to follow the iPhone Duo with a bigger Duo Max and possibly a stripped-down Duo SE or a clamshell Duo Mini. The shipping Duo is the only one of them anyone can measure.

A case designer can put calipers on a shipping iPhone Duo today. The Duo Max is a name in a newsletter, and the reports carry no date and no screen size for it.
The naming choice is the nearest thing to evidence about intent. Gurman reported before the launch that employees inside Apple had begun calling the device the iPhone Ultra [3], and Apple picked a suffix that can carry further suffixes.
Sizes are where a plan gets concrete, and only one is measurable. Tom's Guide puts the Duo's foldable screen at 7.6 inches [4]. Against that, the long-rumoured tablet panel is 2.5 to 2.6 times the diagonal, roughly six times the area if the aspect ratio held [16]. The same outlet guesses a Duo Max would add an inch or two to the Duo, landing somewhere near an 11-inch iPad [7]. A six-times-area tablet and a phone an inch or two bigger are two separate layout problems.
The clamshell is a third. Tom's Guide describes a possible Apple clamshell as its answer to the Galaxy Z Flip 8 or the Motorola Razr, a compact version of an ordinary phone [8]. A team that spent this year fitting its app to one large unfolded canvas would be starting from scratch on a small outer display.
Gurman is confident about the first device. He wrote that he fully expects the Duo to become the "predominant foldable phone on the market" [10], and that it is "so impressive" that it will "turn foldables into the new normal" [11]. Tom's Guide's stated evidence for demand is that the Duo "does seem to be generating a lot of positive buzz" [9]. No shipment or usage figure has been published for the device.
So split the roadmap into two columns. Column one is work that pays back on the 7.6-inch Duo by itself: runtime size queries, reflowed layouts, multi-window handling, a settings screen that does not assume one width. Column two only pays back if a second body ships: injection molds, per-model artwork, SKU-level inventory, a launch beat for a device with no announced date.
Then apply one test to everything in column two. Ask whether the spend still earns back if the Duo Max arrives three years late, or never. For a case maker with one mold per model, it does not, and waiting for a leak does not improve the answer. For a developer whose layout code asks the OS for the display size instead of matching on a model name, it does, and the same code covers a clamshell it has never seen.
MacRumors puts the SE and the Mini in the same sentence as the words "perhaps even" [1].
What to watch
- A published dimension or ship window for a second foldable body. That is what moves tooling and artwork out of the option column.
- First Duo sell-through numbers from Apple or a channel tracker, since the family forecast currently rests on Gurman's expectation.
- Whether the 18.8 to 20 inch foldable tablet survives, after reports that a foldable MacBook was canceled.
