Nielsen puts Miles Morales ahead of every live-action Spider-Man, by 1.7 billion minutes

The firm's 121 billion minute count makes the animated line the most-consumed part of the franchise. Its television figures, as published, do not add up.

What happened

  • Nielsen counted more than 121 billion minutes of American Spider-Man viewing between January 1, 2023 and July 4, 2026.
  • Miles Morales tops the character ranking on 12.3 billion minutes, ahead of Tom Holland on 10.6 billion, Tobey Maguire on 8.6 and Andrew Garfield on 6.7.
  • Nielsen counts only titles filed under the Spider-Man heading, which puts Holland's Avengers appearances outside his figure.
  • Mid-August analytics credited a free update adding the Brand New Day suit with an extra 316,000 sales of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Why it matters

  • constraint Because the heading rule decides what counts as a Spider-Man film, part of the 1.7 billion minute gap is a cataloguing choice, which limits how hard the ranking can be pushed as a verdict on the...
  • contradiction The television figures as published cannot be reconciled with the headline total, so the film-versus-TV split is not quotable by anyone building a case on it.
  • capability A patch that adds a costume now has a measured sales number attached to it, giving licensing teams a promotion lever that theatrical marketing spend has never been able to price this cleanly.
  • precedent An animated title still taking a quarter of its minutes years on strengthens the commissioning argument for more animation on measured viewing rather than opening weekends.

Add the four leads together and the film category vanishes into them. 12.3 plus 10.6 plus 8.6 plus 6.7 is 38.2 billion minutes [17], exactly the total Nielsen gives for all Spider-Man films in the window [11]. There is nothing else in the bucket.

The per-title arithmetic is where the live-action side gets awkward. Miles Morales's 12.3 billion is fully accounted for by two titles: Across the Spider-Verse at 8 billion and Into the Spider-Verse at 4.3 billion [18]. Tom Holland's 10.6 billion is spread over three Home films, because Nielsen counts only what sits under the Spider-Man heading [6][3]. That works out at 6.15 billion minutes a title for Miles against 3.53 billion for Holland, about 74 per cent more per film [19].

Homecoming's 5.5 billion leaves 5.1 billion for the other two Home films put together [20], roughly two-thirds of what Across managed on its own [21]. Neither of the later two can have beaten Homecoming, so the most-watched live-action Spider-Man film of the period is the earliest one measured [20]. Meanwhile nearly 2 billion of Across's 8 billion landed in 2026 alone, with the window closing in early July [10]: a quarter of its cumulative total in half a year [22], before the Beyond the Spider-Verse leak was in the data at all [10].

The report's television side does not survive the same treatment. Films are 38.2 billion of a stated total above 121 billion [11][1], which leaves something like 83 billion elsewhere [23]. Gizmodo prints the preschool series Spidey & His Amazing Friends at 73.7 million minutes while describing it as the bulk of all viewing [27]. Taken literally, films plus the three named shows come to 42.1 billion, leaving about 79 billion unattributed [24]. Read as 73.7 billion, the same four lines total 115.7 billion, which sits just under the headline number with room left for older cartoons [25]. The second reading is the only one that closes, and it means a toddler show plausibly outweighs every Spider-Man film combined. It also means nobody should quote the split until it is fixed.

None of this counts tickets. Viewing minutes measure what is sitting in American homes and how often it gets replayed, and the heading rule that trims Holland's number is a filing convention rather than a finding about audiences [6]. But the convention applies evenly inside the film category, and inside that category the animated titles win on Nielsen's own basis [7][8]. The franchise's most-watched character is the one whose next film is dated June 18, 2027 [16].

What to watch

  • Whether Nielsen or Gizmodo corrects the Spidey & His Amazing Friends figure, which decides whether television outweighs every Spider-Man film combined.
  • The first measurement window that includes the Beyond the Spider-Verse leak and any Brand New Day streaming release.
  • Whether Beyond the Spider-Verse holds its June 18, 2027 date.
