Cross River names former Lazard Asset Management CEO Evan Russo as president
Cross River made former Lazard Asset Management CEO Evan Russo its president on Oct. 1, with CEO Gilles Gade keeping technology and partnerships. Russo's career is in investment banking and asset management, while PYMNTS puts most digital-asset work in integration.

Per one industry estimate, linking a digital-asset custodian to the bank's systems and meeting regulatory requirements is at least 80% of the job, up to 85%, while selecting the custodian is at least 10%, up to 15%.

What happened
- Cross River said in an Oct. 13 news release that Russo and Gade will work to establish the bank as a "trusted infrastructure layer" for payments, banking, digital assets and AI-enabled financial services.
- Russo has been a Cross River board member since April, according to Crowdfund Insider.
- He has also served as CFO of Lazard Ltd. and Lazard Group and as co-head of Lazard's Capital Markets and Capital Structure Advisory practice.
- Cross River supports Affirm, Stripe, Coinbase, Upstart and Plaid among others, and reportedly partners with more than 100 tech firms, Crowdfund Insider wrote.
Why it matters
- contradiction The two accounts of the mandate differ: PYMNTS quotes the release on an infrastructure layer, while Crowdfund Insider has Russo backing global expansion, where it says Cross River's presence is much smaller.
- exposure The digital-asset line depends on integration work that the cited estimate puts far above the vendor choice, and Russo's listed roles sit outside it, so delivery rests on the technology side Gade has kept.
- decision With scale under Russo and technology under Gade, the board has two names to hold to account, and a stall in either can be attributed.
Gade's own sentence says what the job is for. "I will continue to focus on our vision for the future of financial infrastructure, our technology, and strategic partnerships, while Evan brings the institutional leadership, strategic focus and operating discipline required to scale that vision," Gade said [4]. Read for allocation, the CEO is handing off the running of a US-chartered bank [13] and keeping the technology and the partnerships. We think the sentence admits that one executive had been covering two jobs, and that the platform now needs two people to fill them.
Gade also framed the hire as a credential. "Technology is revolutionizing how money moves around the globe, but it still moves through regulated infrastructure, which requires leaders who have built and led significant global financial institutions," he said [7]. Russo has more than two decades across investment banking, capital markets, asset management and financial services [6], and in our view that record is the first thing the bank is buying. The counter-thesis is that the bank needs skills a credential may not bring, and the evidence for that sits in PYMNTS's own research.
The September PYMNTS Intelligence study "Building the Foundation for Digital Money," produced with FIS, found that 42% of banks point to skill gaps as a hurdle to digital-asset adoption [11]. One industry estimate in the report puts selecting a digital-asset custodian at 10% to 15% of the job, with the other 80% to 85% going to linking the provider to the bank's systems and meeting regulatory requirements [12]. That makes integration 5.3 to 8.5 times the size of the purchase decision [15]. The 42% describes banks in general, and PYMNTS did not name the origin of the estimate, so we treat both figures as indicative. The report added: "Digital-asset expertise has to work alongside knowledge of core banking systems, settlement, compliance, liquidity and the operational controls required inside a regulated institution" [14].
We would be wrong about the credential reading if Russo's first visible acts are deals or offices abroad, because that would make the hire an expansion bet. Neither source gave Cross River's revenue, Russo's pay or an expansion target, so none of this can be checked against cash yet. Russo said he was excited "to scale the platform, strengthen our institutional capabilities, and position Cross River as the partner of choice for companies shaping the future of financial services" [8].
What to watch
- Whether Russo's first visible acts are deals or offices abroad, which would favor the expansion reading Crowdfund Insider describes.
- Whether Cross River publishes revenue, growth targets or Russo's pay, the figures that would let anyone check the scale mandate.
- Whether Cross River adds senior hires from core banking, compliance or technology operations around Russo.
