Bitcoin's $80,000 support sits 10% below the $88,000 cost basis of holders seeking to exit

Glassnode says Bitcoin must reclaim $88,000, the cost basis of six-to-twelve-month holders, after US spot ETFs shed about $760 million since October 7. It wants sustained ETF inflows as confirmation, and hot September CPI has raised expectations of another Fed hike.

What happened

  • US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in nearly $3 billion between September 21 and October 6, their strongest stretch since November 2025.
  • The funds' average cost basis is near $81,500, a level Bitcoin briefly lost on October 8 and 13 before recovering.
  • Bitcoin approached the $88,000 level in January and fell more than 33%, then tested $100,000 in May and fell roughly 25%.
  • September CPI rose 0.6% from August and 3.7% from a year earlier, above market forecasts, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Long term holders' realized losses have fallen 85% since peaking on August 12.

Why it matters

  • constraint Recovering $88,000 reaches only the first of two supply zones; a second cohort, with a cost basis 13.6% higher at $100,000, also turned back a rally this year.
  • exposure A break under $80,000 leaves little cushion, since the True Market Mean is only 2.5% lower and Glassnode says further liquidations could follow.
  • contradiction The report's holder-behaviour indicators point to an early recovery, while its ETF flow and inflation inputs point to weaker demand and tighter policy.
  • decision The October 28 Fed meeting falls inside the $80,000 to $88,000 band, so any hike lands on a market whose ETF buyers are already net sellers.

Outflows of about $760 million since October 7 [6] equal roughly 25% of the nearly $3 billion that came in between September 21 and October 6 [5][19]. The outflows so far amount to a pause. We think it stays one only if it stops soon. The upper edge of the support band, $81,500, is the average ETF cost basis [1][8], so the fund buyers' break-even and Glassnode's support level are the same number. Below it, Glassnode found large buy orders around $80,000 on Binance, with the True Market Mean near $78,000 [9].

Overhead, the supply is layered. The $88,000 level is 8% above the ETF cost basis, and the $100,000 level is another 13.6% above that [20][21]. Glassnode says Bitcoin must recover $88,000 to overcome selling pressure from investors seeking to exit near their original purchase prices [4]. It also said a move toward $88,000 could force short sellers to close positions, but that sustained gains would require stronger spot demand [10]. With the ETFs selling, we'd expect a first run at $88,000 to be short covering. That is a guess about who is buying, and it fails if ETF inflows return before price gets there.

The on-chain case for recovery is real. It rests on how sellers are behaving. At the June low, loss-making sales outnumbered profitable ones by roughly twelve to one; profitable sales now outnumber loss-making ones four to one [12]. That takes the ratio from one profitable sale per twelve losing ones to four, a 48-fold change [23]. Unlike in the 2018 and 2022 bear markets, Bitcoin has not closed below its Realized Price, and at its June 30 low it was still about 10% above it [13]. Glassnode said several onchain indicators suggest an early recovery phase [14]. It also said a sustained return of ETF inflows would give stronger confirmation that buyers are absorbing the selling pressure [7].

The macro input is plainer. September CPI ran at 3.7% a year against 2.6% for core [15][16], a gap of 1.1 points [24] that comes from food and energy, the two categories core excludes [16]. The Fed raised rates 25 basis points in September [17], its next decision is scheduled for October 28, and the midterm elections follow on November 3 [18].

Our view is that Bitcoin spends the stretch to October 28 inside the $80,000 to $88,000 band, a range 10% wide [22], and we are watching ETF flows. The counter-thesis is that holder losses are already falling fast enough for the market to absorb the $88,000 supply without the funds. We'd be wrong on the downside if a break under $80,000 brings the liquidations Glassnode describes [10], and wrong on the upside if inflows resume and price clears $88,000 with spot demand behind it.

What to watch

  • Whether US spot ETF flows turn back to net inflows or the roughly $760 million of outflows keeps growing.
  • Whether Bitcoin holds the $80,000 to $81,500 band, where Glassnode found large Binance bids, or breaks it and triggers the liquidations it describes.
  • The October 28 Fed decision, after the 25 basis point increase in September and a 3.7% annual CPI print.
