Ant International's Singapore-Malaysia treasury now settles around the clock in OCBC deposit tokens

OCBC says it is the first bank to run tokenised deposits for Ant International, settling the group's SGD and USD transfers between Singapore and Malaysia 24/7. The deployment takes OCBC's deposit-token work out of interbank tests on Swift's ledger and into a live corporate treasury.

What happened

  • Ant's entities move the tokens through WhaleRTP, Ant International's own treasury management platform.
  • Each transfer is recorded on a blockchain, an audit trail the companies say reduces the need for manual reconciliation.
  • OCBC's Carmen Chan, deputy head of global transaction banking, said the deal shows tokenisation moving beyond experimentation toward treasury value at scale.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure Being first wins OCBC the Ant balances without locking them in, since a second bank's tokens on WhaleRTP would put those deposits up for competition.
  • What it limits constraint Only SGD and USD are in the first phase, so the Malaysian entities get round-the-clock settlement in those two currencies and none in ringgit.
  • What's now possible capability Ant's entities can be topped up at night and at weekends, so less cash has to sit in each one waiting for the next settlement window.

OCBC ran its earlier deposit-token work on shared rails. Its September cross-border US dollar transfer with Citibank, described by the bank as the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, settled on Swift's ledger [10]. So did the domestic Singapore dollar transactions it completed that month with two other local banks, three banks in all [11][17]. The Ant setup runs on OCBC's own blockchain infrastructure [4]. Add the GOLDX physical gold fund token OCBC launched in April with Lion Global Investors and DigiFT [12]. That makes the Ant deal the bank's fourth tokenisation initiative of 2026 in the record, and the only one that puts a corporate client's treasury cash on the ledger [18][13].

Ant describes itself as an AI-native provider of payment, account, FX, treasury and growth solutions [14]. It is settling its own intra-group cash on a bank's ledger while keeping the front end, its WhaleRTP platform [4]. Kelvin Li, general manager of platform tech at Ant International, said the Whale platform makes it more efficient to manage money across borders within the group's ecosystem [9].

If bank deposit tokens are going to compete with stablecoins for a group's internal float, the contest turns on one clause in the announcement. Corporates can move liquidity outside batch cycles, banking hours and cut-off times while the funds remain commercial bank deposits [6]. The announcement does not mention stablecoins, and the companies did not disclose volumes, balances or fees [16].

There are a few ways this goes. If WhaleRTP connects a second bank's tokens, OCBC competes on rates and service for balances held by a client that controls the interface. If OCBC sells the same rail to other corporates and corridors, Ant becomes its reference client. The deployment could also stay at two currencies and one corridor [3][2] and remain a showcase. I'd expect the first outcome, because Ant built WhaleRTP to work across blockchain assets issued by financial institutions [5], or rather by more than one of them, given that OCBC is described as only the first bank on it [1]. The counter-case is that OCBC gets more from selling the rail to many corporates than from defending one client's balances on price.

So far the evidence is one corporate group moving two currencies across a 168-hour week [19][3]. The case that deposit tokens have moved intra-group treasury work from pilots into production fails if Ant's tokenised balances at OCBC stay small after the first phase, or if the next asset WhaleRTP connects is not a bank deposit.

What to watch

  • Whether a second bank's tokenised deposits go live on WhaleRTP and start competing for Ant's balances.
  • Whether the ringgit, or corridors beyond Singapore-Malaysia, join the next phase.
  • Any disclosure by OCBC or Ant International of tokenised balances or transaction volumes.
