National Bank of Bahrain will reach TerraPay's payout network over Swift links it already runs

National Bank of Bahrain will use its existing Swift links to reach TerraPay's network of more than 12 billion endpoints, the companies said. They did not disclose fees, volumes or which corridors open first, so only the integration route can be assessed today.

What happened

  • TerraPay can receive Swift ISO 20022 messages and deliver the cross-border transaction in real time, according to the companies.
  • Banks reuse the Swift systems and RMA key exchange arrangements they already operate to reach TerraPay's accounts, wallets and domestic payment schemes.
  • The companies state that customers get full transparency on each transfer, with no deductions from the principal amount.
  • TerraPay co-founder Ani Sane said the arrangement lets NBB keep control of the customer relationship and its core banking infrastructure.

Why it matters

  • cost With nothing deducted from the principal, the charge sits elsewhere, so NBB's net saving cannot be calculated yet.
  • constraint A corridor opens only where TerraPay has a payout route, so NBB's new reach depends on one provider's coverage.
  • precedent Any Swift-connected bank with RMA arrangements meets the stated entry condition, but NBB is the only bank named, so copying is plausible and unproven.

The saving the companies describe sits on NBB's side of the connection. Because the bank already runs Swift and the RMA key exchange arrangements that go with it [3], reaching TerraPay needs no market-by-market build, and the companies say that cuts technical complexity and the time needed to open a corridor [9]. TerraPay co-founder Ani Sane put the pitch this way: "Banks want to extend their international payment reach without having to build and maintain separate connections into every market, wallet and local payment system." [11] In our view the other side of that saving is a decision: NBB is choosing not to build its own payout links in those markets, and its effort goes to client relationships, banking products and a more digital service [10].

We think the integration saving is real and the route can be copied by any bank that meets the same entry condition. The evidence for copying is thin, though. Sane called NBB "a strong example of how leading banks are choosing TerraPay to extend traditional correspondent banking into the rapidly growing world of instant payments and digital wallets." [8] That is a vendor describing its own customers, and NBB is the only bank either published account names [5][6].

The reach figure needs care. The companies count 12 billion endpoints [1], and an endpoint is a bank account, a wallet or a local payment system. The figure counts possible destinations, not the ones NBB's customers actually pay into, and the first corridors are still unnamed [5][6]. If NBB's customers already reach most of their destinations through existing routes, the added reach is worth little, and this would undercut our view.

What would prove us wrong can be observed. If the first corridors NBB adds are ones it already served, or if TerraPay's charge lands above what the bank pays today, the saved integration work does not pay for itself. Neither figure is public. Vineet Munot, NBB's group head of transaction banking, said the aim is "to connect our customers in Bahrain and the region with a wider range of payment destinations". [4]

What to watch

  • Whether NBB or TerraPay names the first corridors and any volume through them.
  • Whether a second bank is announced on TerraPay's Swift connectivity.
  • Whether pricing is disclosed, since the principal arrives whole and the charge sits elsewhere.
