Apple, Amazon and Microsoft launch AI gadgets into the weakest consumer sentiment in 12 years
Apple, Amazon and Microsoft announced AI devices in the past week against the weakest consumer sentiment data in 12 years. IDC's Jitesh Ubrani does not expect large volumes yet, and Forrester's Dipanjan Chatterjee calls the season an early test of demand.

Amazon's Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the largest of its new Alexa tablets, costs $550, against $155 for its predecessor, the Fire HD10. Apple's HomeView hub costs $299. Microsoft's Nvidia-powered Windows laptop starts at $2,599.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the largest new Alexa tablet | 550 dollars | 7 | |
| Fire HD10, its predecessor | 155 dollars | 7 | |
| Apple HomeView hub | 299 dollars | 8 | |
| Windows AI laptop, from | 2,599 dollars | 6 |
What happened
- Microsoft opened the run with an Nvidia-powered Windows laptop from $2,599, built on an RTX Spark chip that runs powerful AI without the cloud.
- Apple unveiled its Siri-powered HomeView hub on Tuesday at $299, with a mountable 7-inch screen and facial recognition for multiple family members.
- Memory and storage costs, pushed up by AI servers, have raised hardware prices across the board and cut smartphone and laptop shipments this year.
Why it matters
- constraint At these prices the audience is affluent early adopters, the group CNBC says would count as a win this season, so unit counts stay small by design.
- decision Apple has chosen installed base over margin at $299, so any further rise in memory and storage costs would come out of its hardware margin.
- contradiction McKinsey finds nearly half of consumers will spend the same or more, while Bain says over half of nominal holiday growth is inflation, so robust spending may mean higher prices.
- exposure Buyers who put off a replacement take unit sales out of the quarter, and Bain expects some electronics and appliances to stay flat.
The prices say more about volume than the launch copy does. Amazon's Alexa Tablet 12 Pro costs $550 against $155 for the Fire HD10 it succeeds [7]. That is 3.5 times the price, or $395 more [16][17]. Microsoft's RTX Spark laptop, at $2,599 [6], costs 8.7 times Apple's $299 HomeView [8][18].
IDC's Jitesh Ubrani described the purpose as groundwork for more aggressive device launches in the coming years [3]. "This is really about getting devices into consumers' hands, into consumers' homes, slowly teaching them how to use it, and getting feedback from them," Ubrani said [4]. He added that the gadgets from the three companies are not expected to sell in large volumes, at least not yet [5]. The price list fits that. A $2,599 laptop and a $550 tablet go to a narrow set of households. CNBC says getting affluent early adopters on board now could count as a win given the macro headwinds [19].
Apple is the one place the volume caveat could fail. If it does, the reason may say little about AI. CounterPoint Research's Mohit Agrawal said in an email that Apple "has prioritized ecosystem adoption over immediate high hardware margins." It is "delivering a local-AI hub at a price point that undercuts what a spec-heavy machine should logically cost," he wrote [9]. A $299 hub that sells well would show that buyers like $299 hubs. Forrester's Dipanjan Chatterjee expects the season to be an early test of demand for a new class of gadgets [14]. He put the open question this way: "What's less clear is whether they are interested in buying hardware specifically because it is an AI device" [15].
Deferral is the second constraint. Aaron Cheris is head of Bain's global retail practice. In an interview, he said: "In a time when folks are being a little money conscious, you say, 'Do I really need the next one of those, or could I drag out the replacement cycle on whatever it is?'" [13]. Bain predicted that sales in some electronics and appliances will stay flat [12].
We think the groundwork reading holds for the $550 tablet and the $2,599 laptop, and that their holiday sales will say little about demand for AI itself. The counter-case is the $299 hub. If HomeView sells in volume, Ubrani's caveat is wrong for Apple, and the next question is whether buyers came for Siri AI or for the price. CNBC's report does not include unit forecasts for any of the three devices, so sell-through data on HomeView, or a price cut on the Alexa tablets, would be the first evidence that moves this view.
What to watch
- Sell-through or unit data on Apple's $299 HomeView after the holidays, the one device priced to test the low-volume view.
- Any price cut on Amazon's Alexa tablets, which cost 3.5 times the Fire HD10 they replace.
- Whether memory and storage costs ease, since they set how long Apple can hold HomeView at $299.
