A stop that hits nothing leaves no dent and no police report, so it never enters the collision comparison the industry publishes to argue that its cars are safer than ours [10]. It does enter a workplace injury log, but only if the employer is one that has to file [9].
Spread the count over the 24 months it covers and you get roughly one reported injury a month across the two fleets combined [12]. That is a small number next to the miles driven. The pattern is what makes it legible: soft-tissue harm of the same family, reported again and again, at two separately run programmes [4]. The filings cluster in Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco, which are also among the biggest markets any AV operator is working [7].
Teams describe the safety driver as a mitigation, the reason a permit is defensible, and the person who catches what the stack misses. What the filings show is different: the driver absorbing the deceleration that the stack chose. Braking early and hard is the defensible call when the object ahead is ambiguous, and the cost of that call lands on the person strapped into the seat. Some of it does not even happen in traffic. Waymo logged incidents inside service depots [5].
The vehicles matter here too. Many of the test cars were not the purpose-built Zoox Robotaxi or the Waymo I-Pace, but Toyota Highlanders retrofitted to carry the sensor stack [8]. So the ride being absorbed by a tester is not necessarily the ride a paying passenger gets, which cuts both ways: it weakens any claim that riders are taking the same knocks, and it means the fleet generating the injury data is not the fleet being validated.
The forcing question applies well beyond robotaxis. Draw two axes for whatever you are shipping with a human in the loop. One axis is who absorbs a failure: the paying user, or your own operator. The other is whether your instrument records it: a metric someone reviews, or a form filed elsewhere. Three of those quadrants are managed already. The fourth is not: your own operator absorbs the failure, and the record lands on a workers' compensation form the product team never opens, so what shipped on Monday only becomes visible days later, once someone outside product reads the file. For every automation with a human fallback, the test that travels is simple: name the dashboard where that human's bad day appears. If the answer is a regulator's database and a reporter reading it, that means the fallback was assumed rather than instrumented. Gizmodo's read is that this attention will grow rather than fade [13].

TechCrunch senior reporter Sean O'Kane, reviewing data submitted to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, found that test drivers for Waymo and Zoox sustained more than two dozen injuries in 2024 and 2025 from hard braking or other sudden movements made by the autonomous vehicles.
TechCrunch reports that in some cases these workers were sidelined for months after sustaining injuries such as whiplash when the autonomous vehicles stopped abruptly and hard.
Gizmodo, citing TechCrunch's report, describes the OSHA data as showing upwards of 20 injuries reported by Alphabet's Waymo and Amazon-owned Zoox.

What is well established is the scale of the activity producing these injuries. Waymo is talking publicly about crossing 200 million autonomous miles and opening in Munich, Gizmodo places the worst incident counts in the three biggest US robotaxi markets, and both accounts tie the rise in injuries to the pace of city launches. The gap is on the other side: no measured uptake of safeguards, protocol changes or regulatory action appears anywhere in this reporting.
Sober count, speculative tail
TechCrunch is careful with what it has; the stretch happens downstream. Roughly one reported injury a month across two fleets is a real finding, but with no driver headcount, hours or comparison job, nobody here can say whether that is alarming or ordinary — and Gizmodo's headline verb 'still causing' plus its forecasts of slower rollouts and heavier OSHA scrutiny reach past the records into prediction. Pushing the other way, TechCrunch's own caveat that most developers may not report at all suggests the underlying number is understated, which keeps this only slightly on the overstated side.
House scoop, borrowed headline
The TechCrunch item is a newsletter selling its own investigation — sign-up link at the top, 'check out his full story' where the evidence should be, and a deal roundup underneath. Gizmodo's incentive is the mirror image: repackage a competitor's scoop within the half hour and add stakes language about Lucid, Rivian and Hyundai. And the safety narrative these injuries complicate is one Waymo is actively marketing itself, via its 200-million-mile lessons post and a chip announcement aimed squarely at Tesla. Two companies whose records are at issue said nothing at all.
Firm on what, blank on how much
That test drivers were hurt by sudden AV movements, badly enough to lose months, is about as solid as a two-outlet story gets, because it traces to records employers had to file. Confidence drops the moment the question becomes magnitude or trend: the count is already reported two different ways, the rate is unknowable from what is here, and the forward-looking parts belong to one writer's reasoning rather than to any document.
