The 15 percent disc figure that makes the decision look obvious is a US number. In Germany it is 58 percent, and a global hardware spec gives those buyers nowhere to go.

The figure carrying Sony's case is 15 percent, the share of PlayStation games ever bought on disc [8]. Techdirt's objection is not that the number is wrong but that it is American and is being read as though it described everybody [9]. According to a recently published German report, physical accounts for 58 percent of game buying there [10]. France is also majority disc at 55 percent [11], Japan sat at 51 percent physical for Resident Evil Requiem [12], and UK reports put discs at 40 to 45 percent of sales [13]. Germany's physical share is close to four times the US one [14].
That gap is the mechanism. A console configuration is one decision applied to every territory at once, so the markets where most people still buy in a shop absorb a spec set against behaviour measured somewhere else. There is no local variant to opt into, which is part of why the complaint has not decayed like ordinary launch grumbling. It has a purchase test, "No disc, no buy" [3], and a scheduled action, a purchase and usage blackout of all things PlayStation in late August [2].
The Phantom Blade Zero showcase is where that costs Sony something visible. Chat was left open for a game whose pre-orders are entirely digital, with no disc version presented [6], and the mantra ran through the presentation at length [5]. Sony then disallowed chat replay on the video [7]. That does not retire the argument, it concedes the channel: a marketing surface has been turned into a petition surface, and the cheap fix is to hold future showcases with the audience switched off.
The date matters more than the chat. Phantom Blade Zero, from Chinese team S-Game, is due 29 October 2026 [6], and speculation is that it ships with no physical version at all [15]. If it does, a digital-only PlayStation release lands at least 14 months before the earliest point Sony's own 2028 cutoff could bind [16]. Publishers can reach the destination first, which makes 2028 less a schedule Sony controls than a description of the slowest mover.
Techdirt's read is that Sony has already braced for the anger because digital carries more margin, and has done the arithmetic that says this is the more profitable path [17]. The same piece expects game preservation to get harder [18] and stories of purchased digital games being taken away to increase [19]. What that math does not obviously price is where the objectors sit. As Kotaku's point has it, digital dominates the American market but not international ones, so the anger overseas is greater than in the States [20]. A protest organised around not buying is measurable against the only number Sony reports, and it is concentrated in the territories where a disc is still the default purchase rather than a preference.

There are plans for a purchase and usage blackout of all things PlayStation in late August, one of multiple organic campaigns protesting Sony's decision to ditch physical media.
A social media campaign called "No disc, no buy" is circulating in protest of Sony's disc-less decision.
During Sony's recent State of Play showcase for Phantom Blade Zero, Sony kept the stream chat live and it filled with comments demanding the return of physical media and repeating "NO DISC NO BUY".
Phantom Blade Zero, an action-RPG from Chinese team S-Game, has pre-orders that are entirely digital with no disc-based version touted, and is dated 29 October 2026.
Sony subsequently disallowed chat replay on the State of Play video, after the comments had already been posted.
Only 15 percent of PlayStation games are ever bought on disc.

Evidence-backed comparisons of source perspectives and observed adoption signals. Read the methodology
Which Builder, Operator, and Investor concerns the observed source mix emphasized—not a truth score.
Evidence, demonstrated adoption, hype gap, incentives, and confidence are assessed independently, each on its own current evidence. How these are measured.
One opinion-led source relaying unlinked third-party data
The cluster contains a single commentary post. Its load-bearing statistics are attributed to unnamed or unlinked reports, the 2028 cutoff is asserted as background with no Sony document, and the causal claims about margin and preservation are the author's inference. Only the directly observed items, the open chat and its later replay lockout, and the digital-only pre-orders, are firsthand.
Real purchasing-mix signals, unmeasured protest scale
There is genuine adoption substance on the commercial side: a concrete digital-only pre-order case and four cited market shares indicating physical is still majority or near-majority in several non-US markets while US disc buying sits near 15 percent. What is not measured is uptake of the protest itself, with no blackout participation counts, campaign reach, or chat volumes, and no sales impact.
Backlash momentum stated more firmly than it is measured
Language such as inundated, everywhere, and exponentially increasing outpaces what the cluster demonstrates: one observed chat, unnamed other showcases, and unquantified campaigns. The forward-looking preservation and revocation claims and the margin-motive reading are presented with confidence but carry no data. The regional-share correction is the article's strongest and least inflated contribution, which keeps the gap moderate rather than large.
Strong commercial and advocacy incentives on both sides
The story sits on two clear incentive structures. Sony is described as having margin reasons to prefer digital distribution and, separately, acted to limit visibility by disabling chat replay, which is a reputational-management incentive. The reporting outlet is an advocacy-oriented commentary publisher whose framing favours ownership and preservation, so selection of the strongest pro-physical statistics is expected. Neither incentive is documented with disclosures, so the reading is inferred from the source's own account.
Low: single publisher, unverified core statistics
Direction of travel is plausible and internally consistent, but every material number reaches us through one commentary post citing reports it does not identify, and the underlying Sony policy is never evidenced in the cluster. Confidence would rise materially with the named German report, a Sony statement on cutoff scope, or any second publisher.
