Samsung's 110 trillion won payout ceiling equals about one quarter's chip-led operating profit

Samsung Electronics plans up to 110 trillion won in shareholder returns this year after quarterly operating profit topped 100 trillion won for the first time. Most of that sum is still a range, and its final size depends on a memory business that earned nearly all of the quarter's profit.

What happened

  • The plan starts with a 30 trillion won cash dividend going to a board meeting late this month, with 60 to 80 trillion won more aimed at extra dividends and buyback cancellations.
  • Investment is also set at a record 110 trillion won this year, about 70 trillion won of it capital spending that includes the P4 and P5 plants at Pyeongtaek.
  • Cash and equivalents reached 92.9 trillion won at mid-year, up from 57.9 trillion won at the end of last year.

Why it matters

  • decision Samsung set investment at the same 110 trillion won as its payout ceiling, so it is paying shareholders without giving up Pyeongtaek capacity or robotics research.
  • cost Staff in the loss-making phone, display and appliance units bear part of the cost through bonus gaps between divisions, and an industry official says friction among employees is deepening.
  • constraint Wider SpaceX credit spreads raise the cost of the borrowed money behind AI chip orders, the demand that has pushed up the memory prices Samsung's discretionary payout rests on.

Samsung Electronics' payout ceiling of 110 trillion won is about the size of one quarter's operating profit. The preliminary third-quarter figure was 107.4 trillion won [1][5][20]. Less of it is firm. The 30 trillion won board plan plus the 60 to 80 trillion won range makes a program of 90 to 110 trillion won [2][16]. The part with a meeting date is 27% to 33% of that [17]. Seoul Economic Daily's account does not split the range between dividends and buyback cancellations.

Nearly all the profit has one source. On Citigroup's estimate, the semiconductor division earned 99.6% of the quarter's profit, after a 20% rise in three months [4][18][19]. Average selling prices for DRAM and NAND rose by double digits for a second straight quarter as AI demand outran supply, according to the paper [3]. On Meritz Securities' figures, combined losses in the mobile, networks, visual display and appliance businesses roughly tripled, to 2.2 trillion won from 710 billion won [6][25]. The paper puts the set division's widening losses down to cost pressure [7].

Add the investment budget to the return ceiling and Samsung has committed up to 220 trillion won this year [1][8][24]. About 40 trillion won of that is research and development, some of it on humanoid robots [9]. Cash rose 35.1 trillion won in the first half [21]. The paper projects year-end cash at 100 trillion to 200 trillion won. That range is 100 trillion won wide, roughly the size of the whole return program [10][22].

Some of the AI buying the paper credits for those memory prices is being paid for with debt. Broadcom is in talks with Apollo, Blackstone and others to raise more than $50 billion. The money would help fund purchases of custom AI chips it is developing with OpenAI, The Wall Street Journal reported [12]. SpaceX is in talks to raise $40 billion to buy Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform [13]. Its five-year credit default swaps have risen to 197.6 basis points, and the spread on its 2036 bonds has widened to 193 basis points from 140 at issue in June [14]. Joachim Klement, Panmure Liberum's head of market strategy, predicted the AI bubble would burst before two years are out. He projected that the S&P 500 will fall more than 36% from current levels by the end of next year [15].

If memory prices hold, the range lands at 80 trillion won and the total at 110 trillion won, 5.4 times the 2020 record of 20.3 trillion won [11][23]. If prices stall, the range could settle at its 60 trillion won floor. A 90 trillion won total would still be 4.4 times that record [23]. On a third path the payout trails profit, and cash finishes near the 200 trillion won top of the projection [10]. I think only the 30 trillion won dividend counts as policy today. The rest is sized to a memory cycle that produced 99.6% of the quarter's profit [17][18]. That view is wrong if DRAM and NAND prices flatten in the fourth quarter and Samsung still commits the full 80 trillion won [2][3].

What to watch

  • The board meeting later this month: whether it approves the 30 trillion won cash dividend plan and sets a figure and a dividend-buyback split for the 60 to 80 trillion won remainder.
  • Fourth-quarter DRAM and NAND average selling prices, after two straight quarters of double-digit gains.
  • SpaceX bond and CDS spreads, and whether Broadcom closes its private-capital raise of more than $50 billion for AI chip purchases.
