Mozilla launches Smart Window in France with Mistral Small 4 as one selectable model
Firefox's AI assistant is out of North America for the first time, and in French. Mistral's announcement says the browser is now powered by its models; Mozilla says it added one option among several.

Mistral's announcement claims the whole feature. "Firefox Smart Window (beta), Mozilla's AI browsing assistant, is now powered by Mistral models," the company wrote [4], adding that "Mistral will help power Smart Window for users in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later this year" [6]. Mozilla's own post, as read by The Next Web, adds Mistral Small 4 as one option and keeps a range of other models available to the user [5]. Both descriptions can hold at once if Mistral Small 4 is the French default and the list stays populated. The announcements do not list the other models [22].
France is Smart Window's third market, after the United States and Canada in English [7], and the United Kingdom and Germany would take it to five before the end of the year [21]. Mozilla said it chose Mistral Small 4 partly for multilingual performance [9]. Mistral says its systems are trained and fine-tuned on regional languages, dialects and cultural context [10], and the France build answers in French, not English [8].
The sovereignty language comes from Mistral. "At Mistral, we're committed to putting sovereign AI in everyone's hands," its announcement said [15], and the company framed the deal as a way to "extend beyond businesses and reach their consumers worldwide" [17]. Arthur Mensch, Mistral's co-founder and chief executive, called it a partnership between "two open source advocates" bringing "privacy, control and choice to AI-powered web browsing" [14]. Mozilla's chief executive Anthony Enzor-DeMeo argued the distribution point instead. "AI is becoming part of how people experience the web every day. We want to make sure that doesn't mean people are chained to one company's self-serving pipeline," he said [12], and the browser "should be a place where different AI providers can compete and open source has a seat at the table" [13].
Mozilla has reason to keep the switching story front and centre. Firefox users objected to earlier AI plans, and in February the company shipped a single setting that blocks every generative AI feature in the browser [18]. Smart Window stays optional, and a user picks which tabs and history it can see [19]. Mozilla first announced the feature last November under the name AI Window and has spent several months testing it [20]. Anyone rolling Firefox out on managed machines will spend more time on that February setting than on the model list.
Two questions separate a browser that hosts models from a browser wired to one. Can a user change the model from inside the product, and does the data term follow the model or the vendor? Mozilla answers the second directly: Smart Window conversations are not saved on its servers by default, and model partners including Mistral have agreed to zero data retention [11]. The first answer sits in the settings screen. If the France build lists a second model and the retention term covers that one too, Mozilla's description is the accurate one; if it lists Mistral alone, Mistral's is [4][5].
What to watch
