Mozilla puts Mistral Small 4 behind a three-model picker in Firefox Smart Window

Mozilla's technical case for the model is one sentence long. It evaluated Mistral Small 4's performance for the Smart Window beta, and multilingual performance was, in Mozilla's words, an important part of the fit ^[2]. Mozilla also says the two companies treated multilingual and multicultural tuning as a core model feature instead of adapting an English-first experience for a new market ^[20]. The announcements do not publish figures, the languages tested, or the models Mistral Small 4 was measured against ^[25].

That leaves an outside team with a fit claim and no measurement. Three specifics would have to hold before the claim means anything elsewhere. The task is summarizing, comparing and retrieving from browser context, not translation ^[3]. The languages are whichever ones Mozilla weighted. The context sizes are whatever Firefox assembles from open tabs, history and saved Memories ^[3].

The privacy notice is more specific than either announcement. A local classifier decides first whether a query should be treated as chat or search, and for chat requests Firefox may assemble the user's query together with relevant Memories ^[14]. Mozilla says the outside model sees Mozilla's IP address rather than the user's ^[13]. Mozilla also says Smart Window is opt-in, that conversations are not used to train models and that transcripts are not retained without permission ^[11], and the joint announcement says Mistral agreed to zero data retention ^[12]. runtimewire reports that Smart Window is not an entirely on-device system ^[15]. Zero retention is contractual, and a user who connects their own endpoint gets whatever that provider's terms say.

For Mistral the value is reach it did not have to build. It can get to Firefox users without building a browser, acquiring a search engine or making Le Chat the center of every interaction ^[26], and it says it traditionally focuses on serving the enterprise and is using partners like Firefox to reach their consumers ^[19]. Mozilla says that across all markets where the Smart Window beta is available, users can still choose from other AI models ^[24].

The capital arrived first. Working back from the September 16th announcement, the Series D closed around September 8th ^[22], and Mistral said the round would fund research, compute infrastructure and international growth ^[17].

"A browser shouldn't be a one-way funnel," said Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla Corporation ^[9]. "Together, we are bringing privacy, control and choice to AI-powered web browsing," said Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral ^[10]. Mozilla is presenting model selection as a user decision ^[8]. The beta tests how many users open the picker at all. Mozilla says it is planning additional European expansion later this year ^[21].
