Sipeed's MaixStation would cost 42% less than a DGX Spark if the $3,999 target holds
Sipeed expects its 128GB MaixStation to cost about $3,999, against $6,950 for Nvidia's DGX Spark at the same 273 GB/s. The speed figures come from Sipeed itself, and the Kickstarter, shipments and NPU toolchain are all still ahead.

What happened
- Sipeed claims 25% faster prefill and 30% faster decode than the DGX Spark on a Qwen 27B model from a single node, and did not say which specific model.
- Sipeed's own email to Tom's Hardware gave a smaller lead, about 10% on both, at FP4 with speculative decoding off, and called wider-lead runs not yet official.
- The AX8860P pairs 16 Arm Cortex-A55 cores with an in-house NPU rated at 256 TOPS at native FP4 with no sparsity, on a 6nm process according to Axera.
- According to Sipeed, the box is about 11 x 11 x 3 cm, runs on USB-C power and typically draws around 40W.
- Sipeed intends to open a Kickstarter at year's end and to ship units within three months of the campaign's close.
Why it matters
- What it costs cost Memory cost is moving against the target: TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise another 10 to 15% this quarter, and the campaign has not opened.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Sipeed's headline lead over the DGX Spark is 2.5 times its emailed figure on prefill and 3 times on decode, so the two sets cannot both describe the same test.
- Who has to decide decision At $3,999.99 the 128GB Ryzen AI Halo lists at the same price, so price drops out of that comparison and capacity, compute and software decide it.
- What it limits constraint Work outside the NPU path runs on a small in-order CPU, and Windows support for the PCIe card depends on demand, according to Sipeed.
Against the 128GB Spark, the target is $2,951 lower, a cut of about 42% [14]. The two match on memory: 128GB each at 273 GB/s [1][3]. The 64GB Spark, from $4,999 and expected through partners on Oct. 23, has half the memory and still sits $1,000 above the MaixStation target [4][15].
Memory sets how firm that target is. Tom's Hardware notes that memory accounts for much of these systems' cost [13]. In August, the lowest U.S. price for a 128GB DDR5 kit was $3,399 [7]. That is 85% of the MaixStation target [16]. DDR5 modules are a different memory type from the LPDDR5X in the box, so the kit does not price Sipeed's parts, and the company did not disclose its memory cost. Sipeed says it priced on current DRAM, not stock bought last year [8].
Several things would have to be true for either set of speed numbers to transfer to your workload. You would run the same model at FP4 on a single node, with speculative decoding off [17][18]. Tom's Hardware's account does not include batch size or context length, and both move throughput.
The memory bus is the same on both machines [1][3]. Single-stream decode is usually limited by memory bandwidth, so a 30% decode lead on identical bandwidth means one box reaches more of its peak or runs better software. That is a testable claim. The NPU toolchain is due by the end of this month [21], ahead of the Kickstarter, so outside runs could exist before anyone pledges. In our view, about 10% is the working number until Sipeed publishes its method.
On software, the Spark ships DGX OS, Nvidia's Ubuntu 24.04 LTS build, with CUDA preinstalled [24]. The MaixStation ships Debian 13 on Linux 6.18 [25]. Sipeed claims vLLM, SGLang and PyTorch support, and Axera adds ONNX, Hugging Face model formats and an OpenAI-compatible API [22]. Until the toolchain ships, all of that is a claim. What a buyer can do today is join a sign-up list [26].
What to watch
- Whether the NPU toolchain ships by the end of this month, and whether outside runs reproduce a lead near 10% at FP4 with speculative decoding off.
- Whether Sipeed publishes the wider-lead runs it called not official yet, with the exact model, batch size and context length stated.
- The final Kickstarter tiers at the end of the year, and whether the 128GB model holds near $3,999 after launch discounts.
