Why it matters

  • exposure Holding the Korean index on a hike day is holding a chip position: the KOSPI opened 1.79 times lower than the KOSDAQ, so country exposure and semiconductor exposure are pricing the same risk.
  • contradiction U.S. buyers marked the chip sector up 1.81% on the 11th while Seoul cut SK hynix 5.24% on the 14th, and the roughly 7-point spread leaves the driver genuinely in dispute between the CPI print and the strait.
  • decision Anyone adding Korean chip names at this open is paying for the view that 17 points of hike probability are already inside the 217.30 index points Seoul surrendered.

SK hynix gave up 95,000 won a share against a 1.812 million won close, and that 5.24% is 1.67 times the KOSPI's 3.14% [4][24][20][1]. The two steepest falls among the large caps were a chipmaker and a component maker, Samsung Electro-Mechanics at 5.21%. Hyundai Motor was cut 4.31%, harder than Samsung Electronics at 3.66%. LG Energy Solution lost 1.39% [6][5][29]. On the KOSDAQ, Rainbow Robotics fell 3.90% and EO Technics 4.15% [7].

A 0.3% monthly core reading compounds to about 3.7% a year, and the 0.4% headline to about 4.9% [8][23]. Off a core figure that only slightly exceeded forecasts, futures moved 17 points on a September hike, from 69% to 86%. That takes implied odds from roughly 2.2 to 1 up to about 6.1 to 1 [8][9][22].

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index closed 1.81% higher on the 11th, with the Nasdaq up 0.96% and the S&P 500 up 0.86% [11]. Set against SK hynix at the 14th open, that is a spread of about 7 percentage points on the same industry across a weekend [25]. The report carries the August CPI readings [31], and it says the US rebound came on lower oil prices and that the gains failed to calm Korean markets [28].

Ahn So-eun, an analyst at KB Securities, put crude first. "Oil price gains have paused, but upward pressure remains after the meeting on the Strait of Hormuz was postponed," said Ahn [17]. "Core CPI came in above expectations, heightening concerns about a September rate hike, while high oil prices and high interest rates are again weighing on consumer spending," she said [18].

The University of Michigan's September sentiment index came in at 47.8, which is 4.7 points below the 52.5 forecast and the lowest since May [15][26]. One-year inflation expectations rose to 4.6% from 4.0%, and five-year expectations to 3.4% from 3.3% [16].

In my view the gap between SK hynix and the index is mostly a rates move. A print that beat forecasts slightly moved 17 points of hike probability, and the most-owned high-beta name in Seoul takes that first [8][22]. The counter-thesis is crude. The postponed ministers' meeting keeps oil bid, chips are the liquid way to sell Korea, and 1.39% in LG Energy Solution next to 5.24% in SK hynix is a liquidity ranking [13][6][4]. If the KOSPI recovers while WTI resumes the climb it broke off after eight sessions, oil was not what was being sold [12]. If the FOMC holds in September and Seoul still does not get back to 6,909.91, the hike was not either [19].

What to watch

  • Whether Oman reschedules the Iran and Gulf ministers' meeting on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and on what terms.
  • Whether the KOSDAQ's 1.75% opening decline widens toward the KOSPI's 3.14% as robotics and battery names catch up.
  • The next University of Michigan reading after September's 47.8, and whether one-year inflation expectations hold at 4.6%.
