KOSPI opened 198 points lower after a Nasdaq decline of only 0.44%

KOSPI opened 3.1% lower at 6,186.08 on Tuesday, down 198.16 points, Yonhap and Seoul Economic Daily both reported. Yonhap blamed U.S. tech losses, but the Nasdaq fell only 0.44% overnight, so the drop is larger than its stated cause.

KOSPI's fall at the open outpaced the Nasdaq's KOSPI's Tuesday open beside U.S. moves overnight, as Yonhap reported; the multiple and the prior close are derived figures.

Key figures: KOSPI's 3.1% fall at Tuesday's opening bell was about seven times the Nasdaq Composite's overnight fall. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.38% overnight. The implied prior KOSPI close was 6,384.24.

What happened

  • Yonhap said the open also came ahead of major companies' earnings reports as well as the U.S. inflation data, and it did not name the companies.
  • U.S. stocks ended mixed overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.38% while the Nasdaq fell.
  • The U.S. consumer price index report is due Wednesday, U.S. time, and could offer clues on the Fed's policy outlook ahead of its October meeting.

Why it matters

  • constraint The CPI report lands after Tuesday's open, so the open cannot show how exposed KOSPI is to the print; that test comes in the first session after the data.
  • exposure Holders now carry two unresolved events, the earnings reports and the CPI, at a level already 198.16 points below the implied 6,384.24 prior close.
  • decision A holder of Korean equities has to choose between acting on Tuesday's price and waiting for Wednesday's data, which could move the Fed's October decision either way.

Add the 198.16-point fall to the 6,186.08 open and the implied prior close is 6,384.24 [7]. Against that base, the 3.1% gap [1] is about seven times the Nasdaq Composite's 0.44% overnight loss [8][5].

That leaves three readings, and the two reports do not choose among them. Korean shares may simply move several times as far as the Nasdaq on a given night, in which case 3.1% is an ordinary response to a small signal. The open may overshoot and fill back toward 6,384.24 during the session. Or part of the price is not U.S. tech at all: Yonhap also cited major companies' earnings reports and U.S. inflation data [3] (it did not say which companies), and Seoul Economic Daily's item [2] stated only the level. Neither report included a close or a cause for the size of the drop.

In our view the 3.1% mostly prices events that have not happened yet, with the Nasdaq as the trigger. A 0.44% move cannot carry a 3.1% fall by itself, and the CPI report is due Wednesday, after Tuesday's open [6]. The counter-thesis is the first reading above: Korean shares routinely overreact to U.S. tech, and there is nothing further to explain.

We would be wrong if the index closes above roughly 6,320, within 1% of the implied prior close [9]; that would make the open a short-lived gap. We would also be wrong if the CPI report arrives and KOSPI barely moves, since that would mean the index is less exposed to the Fed's October path [6] than Yonhap's framing suggests.

What to watch

  • Tuesday's KOSPI close against the implied 6,384.24 prior close and the roughly 6,320 line, to show whether the open was a short-lived gap.
  • KOSPI's first session after Wednesday's U.S. CPI report, as the test of its sensitivity to the Fed's October path.
  • Which companies' earnings reports Yonhap meant, and whether their results account for the part of the 3.1% the Nasdaq's 0.44% does not.
