Anthropic's Docs and Slides ship as paid beta inside a merged Claude
Anthropic says people could not tell whether a task belonged in chat or in Cowork, so it deleted the choice. The document and deck editors arriving with the merge are beta, limited to paid plans, and built to export.

What happened
- Anthropic is folding Cowork into the main Claude app and adding two editors, Claude Docs and Claude Slides, with Claude deciding how to handle each request instead of the user picking a surface.
- Design, Docs and Slides all sit in beta behind a new Output button under the prompt box, which will also house Artifacts, the shareable tools other users have built.
- Pro and Max subscribers get the merged interface first on web, desktop and mobile, Team and Free users get it later, and enterprise administrators are promised at least 30 days of notice.
- Anything made in Design, Slides or Docs sits at one shareable link, and files can be exported to Google formats, PowerPoint or PDF.

Why it matters
- constraint Docs, Slides and Design are beta and limited to paid plans, so a rollout plan cannot assume every colleague who needs to edit a deck can open it in Claude at all.
- contradiction ZDNET tells chat-only users their experience should not change, while the same merge puts background execution and multi-step tool use into the ordinary chat box, so the default behaviour of the plain interface moves under people who never asked for an agent.
- exposure Every project that finishes at a shareable Claude link rather than a downloaded file adds a place where company documents live, with sharing behaviour nobody in IT has written a policy for.
- decision Routing now belongs to the model, so any internal guidance telling staff which Claude surface to start a task in is dead weight and has to be rewritten or dropped.
A weekly report is due at noon. In the example Anthropic used in its blog post, the user asks what moved in the pipeline last week and then adds: "Write it the way we always do, flag anything that slipped, and put the highlights in five slides for the leadership meeting." [24] The user then heads to the office and checks progress from a phone.
"We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged," Anthropic said [5]. PCMag reported a blunter version of the same problem: some projects started in Cowork were not available in Claude's other tools, and the reverse [7].
This has been getting unpicked in stages. Cowork launched in January as a non-coding answer to Claude Code [20]. In July, about six months later [28], Anthropic moved it to the cloud and said an overwhelming majority of the tasks people ran there were not coding-related [19]. Last month the company merged memory across chat and Cowork, so anything shared with one was available to the other [18].
ZDNET's takeaway for chat loyalists is that their experience should not change [9]. Breaking a task into steps, calling tools and working in the background are now part of regular chat, and the control Anthropic describes is a limit on how much Claude does before it checks in [8].
TNW frames the two editors as direct competition with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, noting that Anthropic has put Claude inside Word and made export a headline feature [22]. ZDNET is more careful, saying Docs puts Anthropic "more seriously in the running" as an AI-first Google Suite rival [23]. Weigh the export list: Google formats, PowerPoint, PDF [13]. Work that finishes as a .pptx lands in the suite the company already licenses. OpenAI did the equivalent consolidation in July, folding ChatGPT and its Codex coding agent into one desktop app with a Work mode for knowledge workers [21].
Docs, Slides and Design are all in beta for paid plans [29], and the reports do not say what kind of Claude seat a colleague needs in order to edit at the shared link. Pro and Max get the merge first across web, desktop and mobile [15], XDA reported it is already reaching those subscribers [16], and PCMag said the window for Team plans and Enterprise logins is unclear [17].
Where does the deliverable finish: at the Claude link [12], or in a file someone downloads? And who has to edit it: a Pro or Max subscriber, or anyone on the payroll? Downloaded file plus anyone means this is a drafting tool sitting upstream of the suite you already pay for. Claude link plus anyone means you have acquired a second document store, and enterprise administrators have at least 30 days of notice to work out what that means [15].
What to watch
- A dated rollout window for Team plans and Enterprise logins, which PCMag reported is still unclear.
- Whether Claude Code, kept separate in this merge, gets pulled into the same prompt box next.
- Whether Docs and Slides leave beta with admin retention and sharing controls attached to the shareable link.
