What happened
- Hyundai Motor Securities estimates third-quarter operating profit at 2.3502 trillion won, 7.4% below a year earlier and 16.6% below the 2.8194 trillion won consensus.
- Wholesale sales worldwide, leaving out China, fell 9.7% year on year to 909,000 units.
- Foreign ownership exceeded 35% in January and has sat in the 24% range since August.
- After passing 100 trillion won on Atlas expectations in the first half, the stock fell to sixth by mid-September and then to seventh behind LG Energy Solution.
Why it matters
- decision Kiwoom Securities says foreign money needs the core auto recovery to come before any new-venture story, so Atlas cannot be the first reason a buyer gives for re-entering the stock.
- constraint Analysts cited in the en.sedaily.com report say the stronger won keeps pressing margins and that gains may be limited until robotics and self-driving show concrete results.
- contradiction After a 14.3% cut, Kiwoom's 600,000 won target still sits 91.4% above the close, so either targets have further to fall or the price has overshot.
The lead over KB Financial Group is 7.3559 trillion won, the distance between Hyundai Motor's 63.7867 trillion won [3] and KB's 56.4308 trillion won [4] [14]. That is 11.5% of Hyundai's own value [15]. The stock fell 9.91% in the five sessions after Oct. 7 [6], so one more stretch like that, with KB standing still, would swap the two.
Standing still is a generous assumption for KB. The report puts the KOSPI down 13.43% over the same five sessions [7], 3.52 points more than Hyundai's fall [17]. KB's own move is missing from it. The ranking changes only if Hyundai underperforms KB by about 11.5%.
Shinhan Securities' Park Kwang-rae laid out two cases. "If earnings grow in 2027 and some of the value of new businesses such as robotics and self-driving is recognized, the stock could rebound quickly to the 400,000 won range," said Park Kwang-rae, a research fellow at Shinhan Securities [20]. That range is 27.6% above the 313,500 won close [23] [1], and it sits below the 630,000 won target Shinhan set when it cut from 780,000 won [11]. His other case: "If the earnings recovery is delayed and the value of the robotics business is not highlighted, the stock is likely to keep moving within a range." [21] The report does not reconcile the target with either case.
The first case is the report's own expectation: with the strike over, normalized production, the new Avante and Tucson, and hybrid demand support a fourth-quarter sales recovery [19]. In the second, the won keeps pressing margins and the volume recovery never reaches the share price. In the third, KB Financial closes the gap from its side, a 13.0% rise if Hyundai does not move [18].
We think the middle case is likeliest. Shinhan itself cut its profit estimate for next year by 25.3%, against 14.2% for this year [11], and a rebound built on 2027 earnings now starts from a lower number. Fourth-quarter margins that hold despite the won would show us wrong.
What to watch
- Hyundai Motor's reported third-quarter operating profit against the brokerage estimate and the consensus.
- KB Financial's share price over the next sessions, since the 7.4 trillion won lead closes from either side.
- Whether foreign ownership climbs out of the 24% range it has held since August.
