Bloomberg says ByteDance is close to buying MediaTek chips, a third alternative to restricted Nvidia GPUs
ByteDance is reportedly negotiating to buy MediaTek AI chips for its data centers, though no deal has been confirmed. Bloomberg News reported on Oct 15, citing people familiar, that an agreement is close; the buyer's 2026 AI capex guidance is 160 to 200 billion yuan.

Key figures: ByteDance's 2026 AI infrastructure capex guidance is 160 to 200 billion yuan. MediaTek targets $2 billion in AI ASIC revenue for 2026. Nvidia invested $3.5 billion in MediaTek in August or September 2026.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |

| ByteDance 2026 AI infrastructure capex guidance, at least | 160 billion yuan | up to 200 billion yuan | 4 |
| MediaTek AI ASIC target | $2 billion 2026 | 6 | |
| Nvidia's MediaTek investment | $3.5 billion | 5 |
What happened
- Reuters, relaying the Bloomberg account, said it could not immediately verify that ByteDance is close to an agreement with MediaTek.
- In May 2026, Qualcomm was reported to have signed a deal with ByteDance for millions of ASICs aimed at AI workloads.
- In June 2026, ByteDance was in talks for 50,000 AI chips from Iluvatar CoreX, mainly to support its Doubao AI assistant.
- Nvidia invested $3.5 billion in MediaTek in August or September 2026, Crypto Briefing reported, to deepen work on AI chips including NVLink Fusion.
- MediaTek targets $2 billion in AI ASIC revenue for 2026, backed by its own AI data center running Nvidia Blackwell chips.
Why it matters
- constraint Any MediaTek order faces the same export-control environment that pushed ByteDance to diversify, so a signed deal and a delivered one are separate events.
- contradiction Export rules limit the GPUs Nvidia can sell to ByteDance, yet MediaTek, which Nvidia backs, may supply ByteDance with custom chips built to work alongside Nvidia-designed infrastructure.
- capability Crypto Briefing argues a third supplier reduces the risk that one policy change or supply shortage stalls ByteDance's AI plans.
Half of the 160 to 200 billion yuan capex range is 80 to 100 billion yuan [8]. That is ByteDance's processor budget only if Crypto Briefing's "potentially" holds [4], and the reports now put three non-Nvidia suppliers in line for a share of it [2][3][11]. They do not include a price, a volume or a delivery date for MediaTek [10]. The only volumes in the story belong to the other two: 50,000 chips from Iluvatar CoreX [2] and "millions" of ASICs from Qualcomm [3]. Read "millions" as the minimum, two million, and Qualcomm's order is 40 times Iluvatar's [15] (a loose comparison, since Qualcomm's is a reported signed deal and Iluvatar's is still in talks).
We think this is a hedge until a volume says otherwise. A MediaTek order of 50,000 chips and one of two million would produce the same headline, and only the second would amount to replacing GPUs. If the deal signs at Qualcomm's scale, our reading is wrong. The other outcomes are a signed order too small to register against 80 to 100 billion yuan [8], which fits the hedge, and no deal at all, which leaves the question untested. A disclosed MediaTek volume in the millions would settle it against us.
Nvidia's stake is the one term with a price on it. The $3.5 billion is 1.75 times the $2 billion in AI ASIC revenue MediaTek is targeting for 2026 [5][6][9]. A stake that size is hard to justify on one year's ASIC sales, so we think the price is for the NVLink Fusion work at the center of the collaboration [5], and that the value arrives, if at all, after 2026.
What to watch
- A statement from ByteDance or MediaTek confirming the talks, and whether it includes a chip volume.
- Any export-control response to a deal involving custom chips designed to work with Nvidia infrastructure.
- MediaTek's reporting against its $2 billion AI ASIC revenue target for 2026.
