HomePod mini 2 arrives about two weeks before the HomeView hub it is built to extend

Apple's new HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K will reach stores on October 30, ahead of the HomeView hub due around mid-November, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports. For about two weeks, early buyers will own a speaker that 9to5Mac says is built to extend a hub they cannot yet buy.

What happened

  • Apple is expected to announce the devices at its October 13 "Welcome home" event, where HomeView, its new smart home hub, will also debut.
  • Moving from an S5 to an S10 chip lets the mini offer Siri AI features, which 9to5Mac says no Apple Home product has had before.
  • An N1 networking chip is expected to act as the speaker's Thread and Matter radio, with Wi-Fi 7 support replacing the current model's Wi-Fi 4.

Why it matters

  • constraint Siri AI is also coming to the Apple TV and HomeView, so the mini's case as the entry device comes down to its price.
  • cost A household that puts a mini in several rooms pays the June increase on every speaker, $30 each over the old price, before it spends anything on HomeView.
  • exposure Whoever sets up the house, or staffs the Apple Store, will spend about two weeks answering questions about HomeView syncing with no HomeView to show.

Someone who unboxes a new HomePod mini on October 30 will own it before the hub it is designed to sync with is in stores [1][6]. Gurman's sources put HomeView around mid-November, roughly two weeks later [2][12]. MacRumors reported that the date holds "at least as of now" [2].

In 9to5Mac's account, the pitch is a house where small speakers sync voice control and music playback to a HomeView [6]. What goes on sale October 30 is a speaker with new chips and a newer Wi-Fi standard [4][8][9]. None of the reports specifies which of the mini's new features work before a HomeView is set up.

That weakens the case for the mini as the low-cost way into HomeView. On 9to5Mac's account the speaker extends a hub. In that arrangement it is an add-on for a house that has already bought one [6].

Price would decide it, and 9to5Mac says the new model's price is not yet clear [11]. Apple raised the current mini from $99 to $129 in June, part of a wave of memory-related price increases [10]. The increase was $30, or about 30% [13]. "I personally expect pricing to stay the same, as Apple likely anticipated the upcoming hardware when it set them," the author of the 9to5Mac report wrote [14].

In our view, on this evidence the mini is a sound October 30 purchase only for people who want its hardware for its own sake. Waiting costs about two weeks. Buying early means owning the speaker before the HomeView syncing it was pitched on can be tried at home [12].

A 2x2 helps with the choice. One axis is whether a HomeView is on the shopping list. The other is whether the S10 chip, the N1 radio and Wi-Fi 7 would justify the speaker if HomeView slipped well past mid-November [2][4][8][9]. Hub planned and hardware enough: buy on the 30th. Hardware enough and no hub planned: buy, and decide on HomeView later. Hub planned but hardware not enough: wait and set up both together. Neither: skip this model.

What to watch

  • Apple's October 13 prices for the mini, Apple TV 4K and HomeView, which settle whether the mini is the cheapest Siri AI device in the lineup.
  • Whether HomeView's mid-November date holds, given Gurman's sources describe it as firm only "at least as of now."
  • Whether Apple says which mini features, including Siri AI and the N1 Thread and Matter radio, work without a HomeView in the house.
