Google strips Pro models from the $4.99 AI Plus plan on November 13

Google will cut Pro model access from its $4.99 AI Plus plan on November 13, leaving Flash and Flash-Lite. Keeping Pro means moving to AI Pro or above; at the $19.99 tier 9to5Google lists, that is $15 more a month per person.

Key figures: the tier that gains Argon access costs $19.99 a month. AI Plus, which gives access to two models, costs $4.99 a month after Google cut it in June from $7.99 a month.

What happened

  • Google announced the tier change earlier this month, just before Gemini 4 Argon went live, and said Argon is included for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
  • 9to5Google traced the date to an email that one Reddit user posted, and a couple of other subscribers report receiving the same message.
  • The email tells subscribers that earlier chats that used a Pro model can be continued with a different model.
  • Free accounts moved first: from October 9, Gemini defaults them to an Auto setting that sends most prompts to Flash-Lite, and free users cannot control when another model is used.
  • Google cut the Plus price from $7.99 to $4.99 in June and doubled the included storage to 400GB, BGR noted.

Why it matters

  • contradiction A free account can still get Pro answers when Gemini decides a prompt needs them, per BGR, while a paying Plus account cannot select Pro at all.
  • exposure Subscribers who paid for a full year of Plus bought it on the old terms, and some are calling those one-year plans a scam on Reddit, BGR reported.
  • decision Every Plus seat needs a decision before November 13, and the people who chose Pro by hand for work output are the ones whose Flash results should be checked first.

Google's email puts the change in one sentence: the ability to select Pro models in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Google Search "will only be available to Google AI Pro subscribers and above" [2].

9to5Google lists Plus at $4.99 a month and the tier that gains Argon at $19.99 [7]. Moving a seat to that tier costs $15.00 more a month [15], or $180 a year [16], and the new price is about four times the old one [17].

Both reports describe individual subscribers, so $15.00 is a per-person list-price difference. Neither speaks to team or managed accounts, and anyone paying for Plus on a team's behalf should confirm what applies to theirs.

BGR cites r/GeminiAI threads in which some users said Pro was the only thing that made Plus worth it [11], while others pointed out that Flash is usually enough for most things [13]. A longtime user shared that they were planning to move to Claude and DeepSeek [14]. BGR's evidence is forum posts, and neither report gives usage figures.

Plus keeps some value. BGR notes it still includes twice the usage limits of the free tier [10] and remains worth having if you mostly use it for storage [18].

Sort each seat on two points: whether Pro was the reason the seat exists or an extra, and whether the person's last real Pro prompts hold up when rerun on Flash before November 13.

- Extra, Flash holds up: stay on Plus for the storage and the higher usage limits. - Extra, Flash falls short: stay on Plus and route those tasks to a seat that already pays for Pro. - Reason, Flash holds up: Flash was enough, so stay on Plus and have the person confirm it over a week of real work. - Reason, Flash falls short: upgrade, or price another vendor against the extra $15.00 a month.

Only the last quadrant spends the $180 a year [16].

What to watch

  • Whether Google's Help Centre article says if Plus accounts get any automatic routing to Pro, as free accounts do.
  • Whether Google offers annual Plus buyers a refund or a prorated credit before the November 13 cutoff.
  • Whether the email's account of the change matches what team and managed Google accounts see in their own settings.
