US hotel checkout now completes inside AI Mode, with the hotel or travel site left as merchant of record for refunds, disputes and the support desk, while Google takes the conversion event and the partner keeps the cost of what follows.

Merchant of record is the role that owns the settlement and the dispute, which is why the term worth reading twice here is the one where the hotel or the booking platform keeps that role and handles all customer service on a transaction completed inside Google's own interface with Google Pay [3][2]. The support desk still belongs to the partner even as the moment of conversion shifts to Google's surface, and the publisher's own summary of the arrangement is that Google commands the discovery and checkout screen while the partner possesses the transaction and everything that goes wrong afterwards [12].
Split the launch list and the trade gets legible. Five of the ten names are booking platforms, being Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com, and five are chains, being Choice, Hilton, IHG, Marriott and Wyndham [1][4]. For a chain, a stay that completes on Google is a direct booking that arrives without an intermediary in the middle. For a platform in the same list, it is a surface where its rates sit next to the rates of the chains it resells, and where the click that used to arrive on its own site arrives on Google's instead.
What the disclosed terms allocate is cost, not revenue: the coverage sets out merchant of record, customer service and Google Pay checkout, and states no fee, commission or revenue split for Google [4]. So nobody outside the ten can yet price whether this channel is cheaper or dearer than the paid search that fed the same funnel, which is the number that decides the whole question.
The staging shows this was negotiated well in advance. All six partners Search VP of Engineering Julie Farago named in a November 2025 post are in Thursday's ten, which adds four more [2][8], and the same pattern already ran through restaurants and events with OpenTable, Resy and Ticketmaster [10] and through retail with Walmart, Wayfair and Etsy inside Search and Gemini [11]. The funnel is wide where it gathers intent and narrow where money moves: price tracking in more than 180 countries and territories off fares from more than 300 partners, points pricing available globally, completion in one country in one language [3][6][7]. Flights, notably, still end with the user leaving to buy on the airline's site or their preferred platform [5], and the announcement gives no reason, which either means the airlines would not concede the checkout or means the itinerary is harder to close than a room night.
This is probably wrong, but the disintermediation the platforms have warned about looks less like losing the booking and more like losing the right to be the place where the booking gets decided, with the servicing obligation left behind as the consolation. The counter-thesis is on the same page: as merchant of record the partner keeps the transaction, the customer record and the loyalty enrollment [3], so if these sessions are incremental rather than diverted, a partner is selling inventory it would not otherwise have sold and paying nothing new for the placement. Behaviour will settle this more than language, and the tell will be whether Expedia and Booking.com widen this integration when the terms come up again, or quietly let it sit at ten hotels and no flights.

Google added hotel booking to AI Mode on Thursday, with US users able to book hotels and pay with Google Pay.
After a user selects a hotel, a "Continue on Google" button appears next to participating partners, and room type, cancellation terms and payment are handled within Google's interface, with the transaction completed using Google Pay.
James Byers, Group Product Manager for Search, wrote that when users book hotels through AI Mode the hotel or booking platform acts as the merchant of record and handles any customer service.
Hotel booking started rolling out in the US in English and will be available over the coming weeks with Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.
Flights do not complete inside AI Mode: users build the itinerary there, then buy through the airline's own site or their preferred booking platform.
AI Mode flight price tracking is live in more than 180 countries and territories, with fares priced from more than 300 partner airlines and travel sites.

Evidence-backed comparisons of source perspectives and observed adoption signals. Read the methodology
Which Builder, Operator, and Investor concerns the observed source mix emphasized—not a truth score.
Evidence, demonstrated adoption, hype gap, incentives, and confidence are assessed independently, each on its own current evidence. How these are measured.
Specific but single-sourced from the vendor announcement
Facts are concrete and checkable — named executives, an exact ten-partner list, 180+ countries, 300+ fare sources — but every one traces to Google's own announcement as relayed by one outlet. No partner confirmation, no independent testing of the flow, and no documentation of the commercial or dispute terms behind the merchant-of-record line.
Announced availability, no usage evidence
There is a real shipped surface — hotel checkout rolling out in the US in English, price tracking in 180+ countries, points pricing globally — plus committed partner names, which is more than an intention. But the transacting step is one country and one language, several partners arrive only 'over the coming weeks', and no bookings, conversion or user numbers are reported.
Agentic-commerce framing outruns a US-only checkout
Srinivasan's 'all commercial experiences seamless and agentic' framing and the travel-agent comparison sit on top of one country, one language, a partner list that is still filling in, flights that do not complete at all, and zero disclosed volume or economics. The publisher's own 'Google commands the screen, partner owns the fallout' framing adds interpretive weight beyond what the announcement establishes.
Vendor-announcement pipeline plus outlet promotion
The narrative originates with Google, which benefits from positioning AI Mode as an agentic commerce surface, and is carried by three Google executives' quotes with no counterparty voice. The relaying outlet is a crypto/tech publisher that appends a newsletter solicitation and an investment disclaimer, and cites its own prior coverage as corroboration. Partner incentives to appear inside Google's checkout are unexamined.
Moderate: crisp facts, one outlet, missing terms
The what-shipped layer is stated precisely enough to be trusted at moderate confidence, and it is internally consistent. Confidence is held down by the single-publisher cluster, total reliance on the vendor's own announcement, absence of any adoption metric, and silence on the commercial and dispute terms that the story's central liability claim actually turns on.
