Google moves Flipkart checkout into Gemini six months after India's browse-only shopping launch

Google is testing Flipkart purchases inside Gemini in India, six months after its shopping tools there still sent buyers to outside sites to pay. Flipkart stays seller of record, so Google gains the screen where shoppers choose while the sale remains Flipkart's.

What happened

  • Google has started a limited test in India that lets select users buy from Flipkart inside the Gemini app or AI Mode in Search, with a broader rollout planned for later in October 2026.
  • Gemini's shopping tools arrived in India in April 2026 in English and Hindi, offering listings and price comparisons but sending buyers to outside sites to finish the purchase.
  • The checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard Google introduced in January 2026 that connects assistants to a store's inventory and checkout systems.
  • Retailers such as Flipkart remain the seller of record on orders placed through Gemini.

Why it matters

  • exposure Retailers that connect through UCP open their inventory and checkout to an assistant that also compares their prices, so the choice of seller is made on a screen Google controls.
  • decision With Google's own wallet as the primary method, Indian payment providers have to negotiate their way into Gemini checkout, as Razorpay has in the UPI pilots.
  • precedent A working Flipkart pilot gives Google a template to carry to the other early UCP adopters, including Walmart, Target, Wayfair and Shopify merchants.

The payment and the sale in this pilot sit with different companies. Google runs the chat window, and its wallet is the primary checkout method [5]. Flipkart books the order as seller of record, according to Crypto Briefing's report [6]. Google is not holding stock or becoming the merchant. It holds the step before the order, where the assistant finds options and compares prices before it processes the purchase [3].

The timeline was short. Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026 [4] and the Flipkart test started in October [1], nine months from a published standard to a live in-chat checkout in India [1]. The browse-only tools had been in the market for six of those months [2]. The checkout is still in beta, on a phased rollout [8].

Gemini may stay a front end that hands Flipkart finished orders, in which case Flipkart's cost is the comparisons it loses to rival sellers. Google may instead start charging merchants for orders closed in the chat, and the assistant would then be a paid sales channel sitting above the marketplaces. Or shoppers keep opening the Flipkart app, and in-chat checkout stays a convenience used at the margin. The report does not give order volumes or say whether Google takes a fee on these orders, so the second outcome cannot yet be priced.

I think the angle is right about checkout and early about power. Google's leverage comes from the comparison step. Gemini draws on a Shopping Graph that maps availability, pricing and seller information across the web [9], so it decides which offers a shopper sees before any retailer's page loads. Moving the purchase into the chat removes the hand-off to outside sites that the April tools still required [7]. The counter-case has weight. A retailer that stays seller of record keeps the order and its revenue [6], and Flipkart signed on as an early UCP adopter alongside Walmart, Target, Wayfair and Shopify [10]. The standard exists to let an assistant reach a store's inventory and checkout systems [4], and those retailers adopted it early.

Other payment providers enter by partnership. The India pilots are testing UPI payments through providers such as Razorpay, with BigBasket among the first brand partners [11], inside a checkout where Google Pay is the primary method and PayPal is still on the roadmap [5].

Two results would count against this view. One is the broader rollout planned for later in October [1] stalling in beta. The other is Google keeping the channel free to merchants while Gemini orders stay small beside what Flipkart sells through its own app, in which case the buying decision stays on the storefront.

What to watch

  • Whether the broader rollout planned for later in October 2026 goes ahead and takes in-chat checkout out of beta.
  • Any fee or commission Google attaches to orders completed through the Universal Commerce Protocol.
  • Whether UPI through Razorpay moves from pilot to a standard payment option beside Google Pay.
