Seoul Economic Daily calls glass substrates the next packaging battleground. The committed dollars it names belong to Intel; the only Korean number in the story is a share price.

The two scaling rates the report puts side by side are the packaging argument, whether or not glass ends up winning it. Nvidia's logic transistor count rose 6.2 times between the A100 80GB and Rubin [1], while the HBM travelling with it rose 3.6 times [2], so memory per unit of compute fell by about 42% [3]. Fewer bytes per transistor means every byte has to move faster, and speed there is wiring density, which lives in the substrate rather than in the DRAM cell.
SEMI's own two numbers do not describe the same market. A 67.2% annual growth rate [14], compounded across the twelve years to 2040, multiplies a market roughly 477 times, so the $13 billion projected for around 2040 [15] implies a starting base near $27 million [4]. Begin instead from a billion dollars and the trip to $13 billion works out at 23.8% a year [5], about a third of the advertised rate. The growth figure describes a pilot line; the market figure describes an industry.
Park Sung-soo, CEO of JWMT, told the paper that CoWoS is reaching its technical limits and that glass is Korea's chance to step out of TSMC's shadow [5]. He is also describing the market he sells into, and no Korean spending figure appears beside the claim. TSMC has taken glass CoWoS development to Ibiden in Japan and Innolux in Taiwan [13], which is where any Korean packaging franchise would have to displace incumbents rather than open a category. Apple moved iPhone AP production to TSMC [1], Nvidia now places most of its top-tier chip work there [2], and a senior equipment industry official quoted anonymously by the paper locates the cause inside Samsung, which treated the foundry division as an outsider while chasing front-end miniaturisation [4]. Memory looked insulated from all that, because stacking DRAM was Korea's own process. It is less insulated once the logic die inside an HBM stack, and the substrate beneath it, determine what the product does [6]. A supplier can own the best cell in the industry and still have its content per socket set by whoever owns the platform it plugs into.

Against that, glass substrates are not in volume production anywhere in the cluster - full-scale commercialisation is forecast only from 2028 - and no Korean corporate capex, qualification win, customer or revenue figure is disclosed. The only Korean quantity attached to glass in the story is a share price.
Framing runs well ahead of the evidence and the money
The story is framed as a game-changing chance for Korea to escape TSMC's shadow and dominate foundry as well as memory, but every committed dollar it names belongs to Intel, the incumbent it says is being displaced is simultaneously extending CoWoS onto glass, and the market forecast underwriting the opportunity is arithmetically incoherent (67.2% annual growth to $13bn by 2040 implies a 2028 base of roughly $27m; a $1bn base needs only about 23.8%). A 4.8x re-rating in Samsung Electro-Mechanics sits alongside no disclosed Korean glass revenue, capacity or qualification. The physical premise about plastic substrate limits is credible, which keeps the gap short of the extreme.
Domestic-champion framing built on interested and anonymous voices
The named forward-looking claim comes from the CEO of JWMT, a semiconductor-industry company positioned around the next-generation packaging market he says is opening; the diagnosis of Samsung's failure comes from an anonymous equipment-industry official with no accountability for the assertion; and no Samsung, TSMC, Intel or SEMI response is included. The publisher is a Korean financial daily writing for a domestic equity audience, and the piece resolves into a Korean listed-company share move and state funding lines - an alignment of editorial framing with reader positioning that the article does not disclose or offset.
