Sony wires a 100-channel ad grid into the PS5 home screen

The channels come from the same syndicators already filling Tubi and Pluto TV. What is new is the placement: a Media tab tile that needs no download, on a console owned by a studio that also decides whose channel sits where.

What happened

  • Sony announced Live TV on PS5 on August 31, a free ad-supported service giving US console owners over 100 live channels plus on-demand movies, TV and anime.
  • It sits in the Media tab of the PS5 home screen with no separate download, requires a PlayStation account sign-in, and does not need a PS Plus subscription.
  • Sony says the service will reach Bravia TVs later this year, with Canada and further regions planned but no timeline attached to that expansion.

Why it matters

  • capability Sony can now sell advertising against its console base without winning an app install, because the tile ships in the Media tab while Tubi and Pluto TV still have to be downloaded.
  • decision Anyone syndicating a FAST channel has to decide whether to license into a grid whose largest single supplier is the platform owner's own studio arm.
  • exposure Buyers of digital titles on PlayStation are the ones carrying licensing risk, and PCMag could not establish whether the day's removals had anything to do with the launch.
  • contradiction Reviewers treat the service as a small convenience while PS5 owners quoted by TechRadar say the lineup duplicates what they already watch elsewhere, which changes what the 100-channel number is worth.

A PS5 owner who treats the console as a media hub can already download Tubi and Pluto TV onto it [13]. The marginal action Live TV on PS5 creates isn't watching free TV, since that was already possible; it's tapping a different tile, because the new one sits in the Media tab without being installed [3]. That's the part worth noticing.

Free ad-supported television is an inventory business. Sony is now standing on both sides of the counter. More than 100 of the launch channels come from Sony Pictures Television [6], the anime comes through Crunchyroll, which Sony owns, including an exclusive Black Clover channel [7], and the rest is licensed in: MovieSphere by Lionsgate, FilmRise Free Movies, 50 Cent Action, Cinevault, Ice Road Truckers from A+E's HISTORY [8], plus FOX Sports, NASCAR, UFC and news from NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from FOX [9]. For anyone syndicating a FAST channel, that is a new storefront run by a supplier who competes with them for the same grid position. Sony has not published the full channel list [22].

Watching requires signing in to a PlayStation account, though not PS Plus [3]. None of the four write-ups says what Sony does with that identity, which is the question a media buyer will ask first and the one the launch coverage does not answer.

The economics around the box explain the timing better than the channel lineup does. Pocket-lint reports Sony raised the price of every PS5 model in March, citing "continued pressures in the global economic landscape," taking the Digital Edition's starting price to $600 against a $400 launch price almost six years earlier [17]. That is a 50 percent increase on the entry point [18]. In July, Sony said it would stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from 2028 [19]. Hardware got more expensive, ownership got thinner, and now a free tier has landed on the home screen.

Which brings up the day's awkward pairing. PCMag reports that Sony removed 551 purchased titles from users' accounts, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Deer Hunter, citing changes to content licensing agreements for StudioCanal properties [10]; PCMag says it is unclear whether that is connected to the FAST launch and that Sony has not explained the decision in full [11]. TechRadar separately recalls the uproar when Sony deleted 500 movies people had paid for after a licensing conflict [12]. Licensing decides both what a viewer keeps and what streams past them for free, and only one of those two things is being announced.

The honest read on value: Tom's Guide calls the channels barely a footnote among the PS5's selling points while still useful to people who own one [20], and Reddit users quoted by TechRadar said the lineup looked strikingly similar to Tubi, Pluto TV and Roku, with one noting it "sounds like the same channels as [my] Roku TV" [14]. One commenter had the mechanism right: the same providers feed every free service [15].

If you ship a preinstalled surface, the forcing function is a two-column count, not an hours chart. Column one: streams from accounts that had no other free-streaming app installed. Column two: streams from accounts that did. Only column one is demand you created; column two is a tile swap you can bill to advertisers but should not put in a roadmap slide as growth. And if you license channels, price a platform-owned grid as promotion of the platform's own catalogue, with your channel as the filler, until placement is contractual rather than editorial.

What to watch

  • Whether the Bravia TV rollout later this year carries the same lineup, and whether Sony gives it the same default placement it gets on the PS5 Media tab.
  • Whether Sony publishes the full channel list and says what the required PlayStation account sign-in contributes to ad targeting.
  • Whether third-party FAST apps such as Tubi and Pluto TV keep their current position on the PS5 Media tab once Sony's own tile is there.
