Sword's PS5SX2 runs PCSX2's recompilers on the PS5's own Zen 2 chip

Modder Sword has ported PCSX2 to jailbroken PS5s, where the console itself recompiles PS2 code on its Zen 2 chip and renders games at up to 4K. The PS5 has no official Vulkan driver, so the port's graphics run through a modified community layer called ps5vk.

PS5 itself renders PS2 games; CD releases won't load How the PS5SX2 port reaches its users, owners of CD-based PS2 games, the ps5vk layer and online players.

PS5SX2 users: the PS5 recompiles and renders itself, no host streaming. CD-based PS2 game owners: only DVD releases load. ps5vk: a modified version replaces building a Vulkan driver from scratch. Online players: traffic goes to community servers.

What happened

  • Earlier PCSX2 hacks for the PS5 ran the emulator on a separate host system and streamed the picture to the television.
  • PS5SX2 plays physical PS2 discs from the built-in drive or an external USB optical drive, and Tom's Hardware reports it works with discs from all regions.
  • Only DVD-based PS2 games load, because the PS5's drive lacks the laser needed for standard CDs, according to Tom's Hardware.
  • Online play works by emulating the PS2's network adapter and routing its traffic to community-run servers.

Why it matters

  • constraint Only owners who have jailbroken their PS5 can run the port, so its audience is limited to the consoles a working jailbreak can reach.
  • capability PS5SX2 reads PCSX2's .pnach format, so existing widescreen and 60 FPS patches for supported titles should carry over to the PS5 without being rewritten.
  • precedent A modified ps5vk now runs a full emulator's Vulkan renderer on the PS5. The next port that renders through Vulkan will not have to build its graphics path from nothing.
  • exposure Sony's official backward compatibility covers PS4 games, so anyone playing PS2 discs on a PS5 depends on community code that Sony does not ship or update.

PS5SX2 is a native port of PCSX2, a popular PlayStation 2 emulator for PC [2]. Sword adapted PCSX2's CPU recompilers to run on the PS5's custom Zen 2 chip [3]. In our view that was the smaller half of the job. The renderer is Vulkan [12]. The PS5 has no standard operating system with official Vulkan driver support, so emulation software on the console needs a custom translation layer [13].

Sword did not write a driver from scratch and instead used a modified version of ps5vk, a layer developed by Mihawk-99 [14]. We think Sword made the right call. A from-scratch Vulkan driver would be a bigger project than the emulator port it is there to support. The cost is a dependency on a modified copy of someone else's code. Tom's Hardware does not say what Sword changed in ps5vk, how much of the Vulkan API it covers, or how specific games perform.

The rest of the release adds features on top of that base. Upscaling goes up to 6X the PS2's native resolution, enough for 4K displays, and the filters include AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution [7]. Disc images load in ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO formats [5]. Graphics, audio and gameplay settings can be changed from a phone or tablet, and the changes apply immediately [9]. The port also supports keyboard and mouse, local co-op for up to four players, and virtual memory cards of up to 64MB per game [11].

Sword is already working on the next console. Asked whether an RPCS3 port under development would include PS3 disc support, Sword said: "Yes, it's coming with it :)." [17]

What to watch

  • Whether Sony firmware updates close off the jailbreak PS5SX2 depends on.
  • Whether Sword's ps5vk changes are published back to Mihawk-99's project for other ports to reuse.
  • A per-game compatibility list or frame-rate testing on PS5 hardware, beyond the feature claims in the release coverage.
