One day of Ethereum ETF inflows cuts against a $138 million weekly outflow

US spot Ethereum ETFs drew net inflows on Oct. 5 while Bitcoin and Solana funds lost money, against a week in which Bitcoin took $241.09 million. Ethereum funds still lost $138.02 million that week, and one day of buying needs a weekly print behind it to count as a trend.

What happened

  • Ethereum funds had taken in $690 million the week before, and their inflows for the year stand near $1.5 billion.
  • Bitcoin funds' weekly gain was their third positive week in a row, lifting inflows since their 2024 launch to about $57.8 billion.
  • Solana funds took about $2.43 million and XRP funds $4.74 million for the week, extending inflow streaks for both.
  • Zcash ETFs posted their first weekly outflow, about $94 million, over late September and early October.

Why it matters

  • contradiction Daily and weekly data give Ethereum and Solana opposite signs, so the window an allocator picks decides whether Ethereum looks bought or sold.
  • decision An allocator waiting for confirmation has a concrete trigger to wait for: several consecutive positive Ethereum days, the condition Crypto Briefing names for the weekly picture to change.
  • constraint Solana and XRP funds took about 3% of Bitcoin's weekly inflow between them, too little to absorb any large move out of the biggest products.
  • exposure If rotation toward Bitcoin keeps going, the research Crypto Briefing cites expects more near-term volatility across the wider crypto market.

Crypto Briefing's account of Oct. 5 does not include dollar amounts for any fund group [14]. It gives signs: negative for Bitcoin and Solana, positive for Ethereum, zero for XRP [1][2]. Opposite signs on the same day fit a rotation story. Or rather, they fit it no better than they fit two unrelated sets of holders trading in the same session.

Ethereum's weekly record shows how little a single day settles. According to SoSoValue data, its funds went from taking in $690 million in the prior week to losing $138.02 million in the week reported on Oct. 5 [7][6][3], a move of $828.02 million from one week to the next [15]. That one $690 million week is about 46% of the roughly $1.5 billion Ethereum funds have gathered this year [16][8].

Bitcoin's weekly flow is small against its base. The $241.09 million is about 0.4% of the roughly $57.8 billion that has gone into spot Bitcoin ETFs since their 2024 launch [17][5]. Crypto Briefing describes the run as steady demand [13]. Net Ethereum's weekly outflow against Bitcoin's inflow and $103.07 million of new money is still left in the two largest fund groups [20]. Bitcoin traded near $85,000 to $86,000 over the period [11].

Little of the weekly money is reaching the smaller products. The first weekly outflow from Zcash ETFs, about $94 million [10], is roughly 13 times the $7.17 million that Solana and XRP funds took in combined [18][19]. At most a small part of the cash leaving Zcash can have landed in the other altcoin funds.

The weekly data could resolve this in either direction. Ethereum funds could string together positive days and turn the weekly figure, as they did in the $690 million week [7]. Bitcoin could post a fourth straight positive week, a pattern the research Crypto Briefing cites frames as investors favoring Bitcoin as its market dominance builds [12]. Or the Oct. 5 outflow could repeat until the three-week streak ends [4].

I think the weekly figures are the better guide, and they favor Bitcoin [3][6]. The case against that view is the $690 million week itself, since Ethereum demand has already come back once within two weeks [7]. A positive weekly Ethereum print near that size, alongside a Bitcoin week in the red, would show that Oct. 5 was the first day of a rotation [1].

What to watch

  • The next SoSoValue weekly print for spot Ethereum ETFs: a positive figure near the $690 million week would mark Oct. 5 as the start of a turn.
  • Whether spot Bitcoin ETFs log a fourth straight positive week or the streak breaks on repeated outflows.
  • Whether Zcash ETFs follow their first weekly outflow, about $94 million, with a second.
