DriveWealth turns to Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin to fund 24/5 US equity trading

DriveWealth, whose network powers investing for more than 100 partners, is integrating Ripple's RLUSD for European settlement, with the US planned. The announcement says partners could gain flexibility to fund outside bank-transfer hours. It does not say how many will use it.

More than 100 DriveWealth partners could gain flexibility to fund investments outside bank transfer windows. 24/5 trading is 120 hours a week. Most US securities trades settle one business day after trading, under the T+1 cycle in effect since May 28, 2024.

What happened

  • The tokens are turned into cash almost immediately and used to fund brokerage collateral accounts, which hold assets pledged against financial obligations.
  • DriveWealth is also adopting Ripple Payments, a cross-border payment service, to accept funds from its global partners.
  • The companies are exploring equity financing through Ripple Prime, whose Delta One operation offers equity derivatives such as total return swaps.
  • Most US securities trades must settle one business day after trading, a T+1 cycle in force since May 28, 2024.

Why it matters

  • constraint On this account the stablecoin route covers European settlement only. US-side funding keeps its current bank-transfer timing until the planned extension arrives.
  • decision DriveWealth is taking four Ripple services in one package. Its funding, custody and financing talks all run through one counterparty.
  • exposure Collateral accounts will be funded by tokens whose one-to-one reserve backing is, in this account, Ripple's own description.

Trading that runs 24 hours a day, five days a week covers 120 of the 168 hours in a week, about 71% [16][12]. DriveWealth CEO Naureen Hassan said: "We've already enabled 24/5 trading; now we need the funding to match, so clients can move with the markets instead of waiting for them." [2] The announcement says cross-border dollar transfers can take longer than the T+1 cycle and links that gap to trapped capital and higher funding requirements [8].

We think the product is narrower than the source's headline suggests. The token is a pre-funding tool: a partner's dollars arrive as RLUSD and convert to cash, which sits in a collateral account [4], and the trade itself still settles on the T+1 cycle [7]. That shortens the wait before a client can trade and leaves the settlement clock where it was. The source text also says the 100-plus partners "could gain greater flexibility" [15], and 100-plus is the size of DriveWealth's network [1].

That reading may still be too generous. If the conversion to cash waits on bank rails, the delay moves from the transfer to the redemption and the gap stays. If few partners opt in, the 100-plus figure is the size of the network and a poor guide to volume. The account does not give bank-transfer hours, a launch date, fees, an adopter count or the name of the institution that converts tokens to cash.

Everything described as under way sits in Europe: the RLUSD settlement integration [3] and the custody work [9]. The US extension is planned [6], further custody markets are planned over time [9], and equity financing through Ripple Prime is being explored [10].

We would change our view if DriveWealth announced trade settlement itself on the XRP Ledger. What the account describes is tokens converted to cash for collateral [4].

What to watch

  • Whether DriveWealth gives a European launch date, fees or partner names at the Ripple Swell fireside chat on Oct. 28, 14 days after the announcement.
  • A date or regulatory step for the US extension of stablecoin settlement.
  • Any sign that trade settlement, not just collateral funding, moves onto the XRP Ledger, or that Ripple Prime equity financing moves from exploration to a product.
