Lianlian puts agent-wallet controls in a stock filing, on a 24-basis-point take rate

Lianlian DigiTech's Hong Kong filing names agent identity, spending limits and traceability as the product. Its cross-border economics say that control layer has to cost almost nothing.

What happened

  • Lianlian DigiTech told the Hong Kong exchange it is building an Agent Wallet platform for commerce in which AI agents may initiate transactions for users or businesses.
  • First-half revenue was RMB875.6 million, up 11.9%, with global payments revenue up 27.1% to RMB600.9 million.
  • Profit came in at RMB10.9 million against RMB1.51 billion a year earlier, when results carried one-off gains from the LianTong venture with American Express.

Why it matters

  • decision Acquirers and PSPs now have to decide whose agent-authorization scheme they will accept before any standard exists, and a licensed processor holding card-network cooperation agreements is...
  • constraint Selling traceability and spending limits commits the company to producing evidence rather than just approvals, so every contested agent transaction turns into a records request it must be able to...
  • exposure With one segment supplying the growth and the domestic book halved, the agent buildout is exposed to any slowdown in cross-border volume, and there is little cushion elsewhere to absorb it.
  • precedent Once a listed processor puts agent identity, authorization and audit trails in an exchange filing, rivals face investors holding a checklist, and "we are piloting agentic payments" stops passing...

The scope Lianlian gave its Agent Wallet reads like a control matrix rather than a product: identity authentication for the agent, authorization management, transaction limits, risk controls, transaction traceability [3]. Each of those is something an acquirer cannot currently establish when the payment instruction arrives from software rather than a person, and each has to be established before approval, not reconstructed afterwards.

The economics dictate how. Global payments produced RMB600.9 million of revenue on RMB249.9 billion of total payment volume in the half [6][7], a take rate of about 24 basis points [16] on roughly $35 billion moved [23]. At that rate, checking an agent's identity and its spending mandate has to be close to free per transaction. One manual review consumes the margin on hundreds of payments.

That segment is also the one carrying the company: 68.6% of first-half revenue [22]. Total revenue rose RMB92.9 million year on year [20]. Global payments contributed about RMB128 million of that [17] and value-added services about RMB75 million [19], while domestic payments took roughly RMB105 million back out [18] after Lianlian reduced exposure to lower-contributing transaction categories [8]. The build is being funded in a year with almost no bottom line: profit of RMB10.9 million against RMB1.51 billion, a fall of 99.3% [21], because the prior-year figure included one-off gains from the LianTong venture with American Express [14].

What the filing does not contain is a price. The company says it has strategic cooperation agreements with Visa and UnionPay International covering agentic payments, and that it invested in AI-native startups during the period, without disclosing terms or amounts [11]. No revenue or volume is attributed to Agent Wallet. What is concrete sits next to it: the same agent technology already runs internally on cross-border compliance reviews, risk-control screening, treasury management, customs reviews and customer service [10], and the perimeter it would ride on is 68 payment licences, more than 200 countries and regions and settlement in over 140 currencies [13], extended in April by a Canadian money services business licence acquired outright and the following month by a Category 3D licence in Dubai [12].

The named customers are AI product companies, Web3 businesses and large corporates [4]. Merchants are not on the list. The party being sold to is the one that spawns the agent; the party that has to accept the agent's credential, honour the stated limit and produce the trace when a transaction is disputed sits downstream and is not the buyer. Whichever processor gets its schema adopted first decides what that downstream work looks like, and Lianlian has now written its version into a stock exchange filing under an "AI Native + Globalization" strategy it announced in April [15].

What to watch

  • Whether the Visa and UnionPay International agreements produce published technical specifications and disclosed terms, or remain cooperation announcements.
  • Whether the next filing attributes any revenue, volume or customer count to Agent Wallet rather than describing it as under development.
  • Whether domestic payment revenue stabilises, since global payments is currently supplying all of the growth.
