Kraken's parent Payward takes 144 days to turn a preliminary VARA approval into a full one

Dubai's VARA granted Kraken parent Payward full market approval on October 12, 2026, covering retail, professional and institutional clients. Kraken can start serving UAE clients in the coming weeks, with spot and margin pairs priced in dirhams.

What happened

  • The approval classifies Payward as a Virtual Asset Service Provider in three categories: broker-dealer, investment and management.
  • Clients get on-chain staking and can fund and withdraw directly in dirhams through Kraken's local entity.
  • Institutional clients get OTC trading and advanced services through Kraken Prime, with liquidity Kraken says is drawn from its order books in Europe, the US and APAC.
  • Kraken received its preliminary approval from VARA on May 21, 2026.
  • Payward plans to add derivatives and yield products through 2026 and 2027, contingent on further regulatory approvals.

Why it matters

  • constraint Any 2026 launch of derivatives or yield needs a second regulatory decision inside the 80 days left after October 12.
  • exposure UAE clients get margin at launch, and Crypto Briefing notes that borrowing to size up a position amplifies losses as well as gains.
  • contradiction Crypto Briefing says Kraken can serve clients across the UAE, yet describes VARA's remit as Dubai outside the DIFC.

The approval is full for the entity and narrower for the product shelf. Derivatives and yield products, the two lines Payward names for later [10], are not part of the opening menu, and Crypto Briefing reports that nothing beyond the initial suite is guaranteed until VARA signs off [10].

The one interval we can measure is 144 days [13], from the preliminary approval on May 21, 2026 [8] to the full one on October 12 [15] (Crypto Briefing rounds it to roughly five months). For a company that already holds more than 100 licences globally [11], that gap is the benchmark the next two approvals will be held against. Payward did not give dates for them, so a plan that runs through 2026 and 2027 cannot be tested yet.

We think what Payward has bought is a distribution right, or rather the first instalment of one: the initial suite is cleared, the later lines are not, and the first months of UAE fees can only come from the former. Three outcomes would make that wrong. The launch could slip past the "coming weeks" the report describes [4]. VARA could clear derivatives and yield soon after launch, which would make the staging a formality. Or volumes could be small enough that the licence matters mainly as an entry on VARA's public register of licensed providers [12].

The cleanest test is the second. A derivatives or yield approval inside 144 days of launch, the same length as the gap between this company's preliminary and full decisions, would show the staging argument was overdone.

What to watch

  • Whether Kraken opens to UAE clients inside the coming weeks the report describes.
  • Whether VARA approves derivatives or yield products, and how many days it takes against the 144 days this approval took.
  • Whether Kraken or VARA clarifies if clients outside Dubai, or inside the DIFC, need a separate permission.
