Leaked setup screens tie Apple's home hub faces to four rumored finishes

Apple's smart home hub, reportedly due October 13, may come in Silver, Space Gray, Starlight or Rose Pink, according to the leaker pdfu. Accessory makers can plan around its looks from the leaks so far, but what it will control has not been reported.

What happened

  • MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris found the same four color names in code for the macOS 26.7 Release Candidate back in August.
  • 9to5Mac says the device, commonly called HomePad, will offer watchOS-style faces that users can customize.
  • Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports a roughly 6-inch square display, sold in one version for tabletops and another for walls.
  • Gurman says the tabletop model holds its screen on a polished metal arm above a round, perforated metal speaker base, like the 2002 iMac G4.

Why it matters

  • contradiction A case or stand maker tooling for four finishes is backing a leaker and a code string over Gurman, whose hardware reporting so far describes a gray model only.
  • decision Mount and bracket makers have to choose between prototyping for the wall version on one reporter's account and waiting for Apple's own dimensions on October 13.
  • constraint Lock, camera and thermostat makers cannot plan an integration from the leaks until Apple says which standards and accessories the hub will support.

In the setup images pdfu posted, the Photo Face step defaults to preview art that matches the finish of the hardware [4]. If the leak holds, someone who unboxes a Rose Pink unit sees pink art before picking a photo. "The Photo Face setup screen picks its preview art based on the hardware color the device reports," pdfu wrote, adding that "the device's housing may also show in setup screens once device assets are available" [5].

That screen is the most concrete user-facing evidence so far, and it is about decoration. The color list has two sources behind it, the leaker and a string in release-candidate code [2][3]. A code string shows Apple named the finishes in software. Whether all four ship is a separate question. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman described "Apple's standard gray aluminum finish" and mentioned no other colors [6]. MacRumors, which reported both accounts, wrote, "we shall see if the other three colors materialize" [10].

An accessory team reading this coverage will look for its own product in it. 9to5Mac's story ends on a shopping list of HomeKit gear, including an Aqara smart lock with Apple Home Key and UWB and a eufy 4K camera with HomeKit Secure Video [11]. Neither outlet reports a price, support for Matter or any other smart-home standard, or any link between the hub and accessories like these [2]. The leaked screens show a user choosing a photo for the face [4].

The reported unveiling is October 13, twelve days after pdfu's post [1][1]. Both outlets give the date as reported, without naming who reported it [1].

Before changing a roadmap, I'd sort each rumored detail on two axes. One is how many sources stand behind it. The other is whether it touches what you ship. A detail with more than one source that touches your product gets planned for; one with more than one source that does not touch it gets noted. A single-sourced detail that touches your product, such as the wall-mounted version for a bracket maker, gets a prototype but no tooling commitment until Apple shows dimensions [7]. The fourth case is a detail that touches your product and has no source at all. A lock or thermostat maker is in that case on standards support as of October 1 [2].

What to watch

  • Whether Apple's October 13 presentation names supported smart-home standards such as Matter and says which third-party accessories the hub can control.
  • Whether any finish beyond gray appears in Apple's announcement or in Gurman's follow-up reporting.
  • Whether device assets appear in setup screens, as pdfu suggested, confirming the wall-mounted version's housing.
