Apple's $299 HomeView is a new Home hub with Thread built in
Apple opens pre-orders for the $299 HomeView, a 7-inch square-screen smart display in stand and wall-mounted versions. The Ambient says it acts as a hub for HomeKit and Matter devices, with Thread built in and no app store at launch.
The Product Desk

HomeView works with Apple Home devices via HomeKit or Matter and acts as a hub. Without cloud-connect, it supports fewer smart devices in total than an Amazon Echo, per The Ambient. Apple hopes its own lock, doorbell, camera and thermostat partly counter that. No app store currently.

What happened
- Inside the HomeView is an A18 processor and a 12MP Center Stage camera.
- The stand version has two full-range drivers, a down-firing woofer and dual passive radiators; the wall-mounted version keeps only the two drivers.
- At launch the display runs Apple apps and services including FaceTime, Messages, Calendar, Music and Home.
- Facial recognition lets it show personal content to each family member it spots, and a plainer home screen for general information.
Why it matters
- constraint Without a cloud-connect option the HomeView supports fewer total devices than an Amazon Echo, according to The Ambient, so a product reachable only by cloud link gains nothing from the new hub.
- contradiction The explainer says the HomeView "has launched" while listing it for pre-order, so its judgments come from specs and early impressions, not from shipped units.
- exposure Apple is launching its own smart lock, doorbell, camera and thermostat, so third-party makers of those four product types now compete on a hub Apple controls.
Hold a phone up to the HomeView and the song or call playing on the phone moves to the display, according to The Ambient's explainer [9]. It is the same Handoff gesture the HomePod uses today [9].
For a team that makes or supports smart-home products, the useful part is the hub role. Like the HomePod and HomePod mini, the HomeView gives remote control of devices when the user is out of the home network [6]. The explainer does not give a shipping date or describe a developer program.
The gap for app builders is the missing store. The Ambient calls that "a missed opportunity" and thinks porting iPhone or Watch apps would not be much trouble [5][11]. Its example is a Ring app that would let a user monitor cameras and answer the door from the display [11]. It adds: "Perhaps an app store will come later." [13]
Voice is the other open item. Based on early impressions on an iPhone, The Ambient writes, Siri AI is "much better than regular Siri" [14]. Whether it matches Alexa+ is left for later: "We'll have to wait until launch." [15]
Teams will tell themselves that a 7-inch screen is a surface for their app. The launch list is Apple's own apps, and the explainer reports no store [4][5].
We'd put each product that touches Apple Home on a 2x2. One axis is how it reaches Apple Home: locally, through Matter, HomeKit or Thread [6], or only through a cloud link. The other is whether its value needs an app on the display or only control from the hub.
A local, hub-only product needs HomeView added to the test matrix and nothing else. A local product that wants a screen has to wait for a store. A cloud-only, hub-only product stays outside, on the explainer's account of cloud-connect [7]. A cloud-only product that wants a screen, the Ring case, is blocked both ways.
We'd hold screen-app work until Apple says something about a store. The cost of waiting is starting late if one arrives. The cost of building now is code with nowhere to ship.
What to watch
- Whether Apple announces an app store or developer program for the HomeView.
- The shipping date and first hands-on reviews, which would test Siri AI against Alexa+.
- Reviews of Apple's own lock, doorbell, camera and thermostat, and confirmation of AirPlay support for other audio and video apps.

Apple HomeView is available in two versions, HomeView and HomeView (Wall Mounted); both cost GBP 299 / $299 and are available for pre-order now.
- [2]
The stand version has two custom full-range drivers, a custom down-firing woofer and dual force-cancelling passive radiators; the wall-mounted version has the two custom full-range drivers only.
- [3]
Internally the HomeView has an A18 processor and a 12MP Center Stage camera.
- [4]
At launch the HomeView supports familiar Apple apps and services, including FaceTime, Messages, Calendar, Music and Home.
- [5]
There is currently no app store for the HomeView, which The Ambient says seems like a missed opportunity.
- [6]
The HomeView is compatible with all devices connected to Apple Home, via HomeKit or Matter, has Thread built in, and like the HomePod and HomePod mini acts as a home hub giving remote control of devices when the user is out of the home network.
- [7]
Without the option to cloud-connect devices, the total number of smart devices supported is less than on an Amazon Echo.
- [8]
Apple is hoping to partly counter the device-support gap with the launch of its own smart devices: a smart lock, doorbell, camera and thermostat.
- [9]
The HomeView supports Handoff: holding a phone up to the display transfers the current music or call, in a similar way to how the HomePod works.
- [10]
With built-in facial recognition the HomeView can spot different family members and show personal content to each, with a more basic home screen for general information.
- [11]
The Ambient says porting iPhone or Watch apps to the HomeView does not sound like it would be too much trouble, and gives a Ring app as an example that would let users monitor cameras, set the alarm and answer the door.
- [12]
The explainer opens by saying that, after years of rumours, the Apple HomeView "has launched".
- [13]
The Ambient writes: "Perhaps an app store will come later."
- [14]
Based on early impressions on an iPhone, The Ambient says Siri AI is "much better than regular Siri", understanding more of what you ask.
- [15]
On whether Siri AI is as good as Alexa+, The Ambient writes: "We'll have to wait until launch."
