Yong Hye-in drops the gender equality nomination after the Democratic Party asked her to decide
Two weeks after being named minister of gender equality and family, Yong Hye-in gave up the nomination at a National Assembly news conference on the 13th and said she will go back to her work as a lawmaker.

Why it matters

The objection came without a vote. Yong said the Democratic Party of Korea's position influenced her decision [4]. She quoted what she was told: the party "said it respects the situation facing me and the Basic Income Party," she said, "but I was told the party wanted me to make a decision, given that public consensus is not broad on holding both a proportional-representation seat in the National Assembly and a ministerial post" [5].
She withdrew on the 13th, two weeks after being named [1], which puts the nomination at about 30 August [14]. The reports do not mention a confirmation hearing. They give no polling figure behind the phrase public consensus and do not say what the coalition received in exchange [17]. On this record the nomination ended over the pairing of two offices [18].
She described the withdrawal as an act of solidarity. "But after being informed by the Democratic Party that there was not much public consensus on holding a proportional-representation seat and a ministerial post at the same time," Yong said, "I concluded after much deliberation that stopping here was the path toward solidarity within the democratic and progressive camp" [13]. On the ruling party she was blunter: "But I concluded that carrying out the post is realistically difficult when even the ruling party is voicing concern," she said [7].
What the Basic Income Party gets back is a lawmaker. "I will return to my original resolve, reflect on myself and devote myself to parliamentary work with a humble and mature attitude," Yong said [11]. The gender equality and family ministry needs another nominee [16].
The cheapest explanation is that the Democratic Party paid nothing here and acquired a standard: one sentence about public consensus, capable of ending a nomination before a hearing. It was tried out first on a partner small enough to absorb the loss [5][17]. The other explanation is that the standard now sits on the party's own members too. A lawmaker of any party who takes a ministry holds two offices at once, and the objection Yong quoted does not distinguish between them [5]. In my view the first is the better fit, because the request was made privately and relayed by the person it was made to [5]. The next sitting lawmaker nominated to Lee's cabinet will show which one holds.
What to watch
- Whether Lee's replacement nominee for gender equality and family holds a National Assembly seat, and whether the same dual-office objection is raised.
- Whether the Basic Income Party receives another government post or role after giving up this one.
- Whether the Democratic Party publishes its own account of what it asked Yong to do, in its own words.
