AI-guided gun turrets give Ukraine its first kills of jet-powered Geran-5 drones

Ukraine's Air Force says turrets aimed by AI and machine vision have shot down the Geran-5, the fastest attack drone in Russia's fleet. Kyiv is putting some of the short-range guns on bridges that Russian drones struck repeatedly in the past week, to guard individual structures.

What happened

  • Kyiv says Russia launched 2,800 jet-powered drones in August, up from 350 in June, as it leans more on mini-turbojet attackers.
  • Air Force spokesperson Yurii Inhat put the interception rate for jet drones at 50% to 70%, against more than 85% for propeller models such as the Geran-2.
  • President Zelenskyy said more than a dozen turrets are already installed around Kyiv, with eight more planned for the wider region.
  • Zelenskyy said the Bars long-range interceptor drone has the best record among Ukraine's interceptors, with a 30% shoot-down rate.

Why it matters

  • constraint Coverage grows only by adding guns at more sites, so the more than 20 turrets Kyiv has committed defend a list of structures, not the airspace over the capital.
  • exposure Structures without a turret still face the 30% to 50% of jet drones that other defences miss; at a guarded site, the gun is the one layer positioned at the target itself.
  • decision Infrastructure planners this quarter have a confirmed hit to justify a turret at one high-value structure; a citywide turret network is a later decision that needs measured performance first.

The Geran-5 can reach 375 mph [10]. Jet-powered drones like it have been a significant challenge for Ukraine's air defences over the past few months, Business Insider reported [15]. Inhat described the turrets as "innovative technologies" that rely on AI and machine vision to make the interception [3]. Officials have not said how many drones the turrets have downed, what share of engagements they won or how far the guns reach. Inhat said only that the range is limited [4].

The pressure behind the deployment is volume. Launches rose eightfold between June and August [16]. At Inhat's interception rate, between 30% and 50% of jet-powered drones are not stopped [17]. Applied to August's launches, that is 840 to 1,400 drones [18]. Fewer than 15% of propeller-driven Geran-2s get past the defences, so the jet models escape at least twice as often [19].

The gun itself is ordinary hardware. Zelenskyy said the system uses a .50-caliber machine gun, a typical weapon of mobile air-defence units [7]. With a limited range, a turret on a bridge protects the bridge it stands on [4]. Russian drones have gone after Kyiv's bridges several times in the past week [6].

Ukraine is also attacking jet drones with its own drones. An interceptor drone flies out to meet the attacker, while a turret waits at the target for whatever gets past. Some next-generation interceptors have already shot down Geran-5s [14]. Zelenskyy named the Bars as the most successful of them [12], and said of the rest: "Others are catching up as well." [13]

Ukraine has used autonomous turrets before. Last year it confirmed it had deployed the AI-powered Sky Sentinel against Russian attack drones [8]. What is new now is the speed of the target [1]. In my view, the record supports a narrower claim than "autonomous point defence works". It shows that a machine-vision gun has hit a jet drone, and that Kyiv trusts it enough to place it on bridges under attack [2][6].

What to watch

  • Any kill count or turret-specific hit rate from Ukraine's Air Force for engagements against jet-powered drones.
  • Whether Kyiv bridges fitted with turrets are hit in later Russian drone attacks.
  • Whether interceptor drones other than the Bars reach or pass its 30% shoot-down rate against jet models.
