Ukraine's ex-defense minister Fedorov unveils an interceptor aimed at Russia's Geran-5 jet drone
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's former defense minister, unveiled an interceptor aimed at the Geran-5 jet drone and targets hundreds a month by year-end. The version that exists today is flown by a human pilot, with AI autonomy planned.

Key figures: Kyiv shot down 55% of Russia's jet-powered drones in September, per Zelenskyy. The interception rate for propeller-powered drones typically sat above 90%, per officials. The jet-powered Geran-5 reaches up to 375 mph; propeller drones reach 115 mph.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Russia's jet-powered drones shot down by Kyiv in September | 55% | per Zelenskyy | 13 |
| Propeller-drone interception rate, typically above | 90% | per Ukrainian officials | 12 |
| Geran-5 top speed, up to | 375 mph | 4 | |
| Propeller drones' speed | 115 mph | 12 |
What happened
- In recent combat tests over Kyiv, a specialized unit of Ukraine's National Guard used the interceptor to take down two Geran-5 drones.
- Fedorov said testing is ongoing, and that the next steps are to improve the technology and scale up production.
- On Monday he said he intends to invest more in research and in the engineering team behind the interceptor, calling its intellectual property a "key asset" in his portfolio.
Why it matters
- decision Partners invited into the first funding round, which Fedorov says is expected soon, would be backing a production target and a software plan, because the only version described as existing is flown by a human.
- capability An interceptor that flies itself would keep working where electronic warfare cuts the operator link, the condition Business Insider gives for Ukraine's wider turn to autonomous drones and robots.
- constraint Several Ukrainian firms have already developed interceptors that can engage the Geran-5, so the edge Fedorov states is cost and volume, and so far the support for that is his own description of the goal.
Fedorov left the ministry in July after six months in the job and launched a defense company afterward [8]. Business Insider's account does not say when the engineering team behind the interceptor began work, what the interceptor costs or how many exist, and it calls the interceptor's speed unclear [5]. A development time cannot be calculated from that.
The need is better documented. Business Insider, describing Moscow's growing use of jet-powered models, cited Ukraine's air force figures: Russia launched 350 drones in June and 2,800 in August [11], an eightfold rise [17]. Officials said the interception rate for propeller-powered drones, which reach 115 mph, typically sat above 90% [12]. Zelenskyy said in late September that Kyiv shot down just 55% of jet-powered drones that month [13], a gap of at least 35 points [18].
The Geran-5 runs on a mini turbojet and reaches up to 375 mph [4], roughly 3.3 times the speed of the propeller models [19]. Business Insider says it resembles a cruise missile more than its slower predecessors [16]. An interceptor has to be cheap enough to build in the hundreds and fast enough to catch a target like that, and the evidence on the two requirements is uneven. On cost, Fedorov said in translated remarks that the interceptor "will be very affordable" [21]. He added:
"That was our goal from the outset: to develop a low-cost, mass-producible solution that can be scaled rapidly," he said [22]. On speed, there are two Geran-5 kills in combat tests [6].
Autonomy and volume are separate commitments. Fedorov gave a date for volume, the end of the year [20]. For autonomy he gave an intention [2]. We do not know yet which comes first, and the order matters: if volume comes first, the first production units will be flown by pilots.
Zelenskyy warned last month that Moscow plans to invest heavily in these weapons next year [14]. A year-end shortfall would therefore carry into a year in which Zelenskyy expects Russia to put more money into them.
What to watch
- Whether Fedorov announces the first funding round, and which partners join besides Palantir CEO Alex Karp, whom he named in September as the first investor.
- Any published figure for the interceptor's speed, unit cost or monthly output, or a test of the AI-flown version.
- Ukraine's monthly interception rate for jet-powered drones against September's 55%, and Russian launch counts against August's 2,800.
