Three hours at the Kremlin bought a three-day truce over two capitals

Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign policy adviser, attached the phrase "considerable detail" to one part of Saturday, and it was the economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects for Russia and America ^[5]; the war itself got Moscow's "comprehensive assessment" of the battlefield and Ushakov's note that the talks were not purely focused on Ukraine ^[4].

That ordering is legible once you ask who has to sign what. Commercial normalisation is bilateral and can be drafted by two parties in one room; a ceasefire needs Kyiv, and Kyiv's contribution on Sunday was that peace and security guarantees are needed and that its proposals are prepared ^[6], with Zelenskyy asking for a direct meeting with Putin ^[14]. Witkoff's public ask was that both sides make some compromises ^[14], which is a mediator carrying positions, and the representatives of France, Germany and the United Kingdom who were in Kyiv, according to Zelenskyy's chief of staff Kyrylo Budanov ^[7], are further signatures on anything resembling a guarantee.

Both sides spent the run-up shaping the table. A Russian drone hit the headquarters of Ukraine's security service in Kyiv on Friday, the first strike on the SBU building ^[21], and Zelenskyy read the overnight strikes on Kyiv and Boryspil airports as a reaction to preparations for the US side using an aircraft to travel to Ukraine ^[22]. The envoys came in by train ^[1].

The measurable part of the weekend is ordnance. Ukraine's air force put the overnight count at 108 Russian drones and six missiles with 82 intercepted ^[10], so 26 got through at a 75.9 per cent intercept rate ^[1]; Russia's defence ministry claimed 258 Ukrainian drones downed over 14 regions, occupied Crimea and the waters of the Black and Azov seas ^[11], which is 2.4 times the number Ukraine attributes to Russia ^[2], or rather two ministries counting different things for different audiences. The pause covered two city limits ^[8], and none of the fatalities either side reported overnight fell inside them, the dead being in Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi and Belgorod ^[9][12][3]. Add the five killed at a Dnipropetrovsk industrial facility on Saturday ^[13] and the talks window carried at least seven reported deaths ^[4].

The only price in the material settles on travel. Cryptobriefing hung its coverage on the prediction-market question of who will visit Ukraine by December 31 ^[16], a contract that pays out on a landing, and the landing had happened by Sunday afternoon ^[1]. Mick Ryan, the former Australian general, told Semafor the current push is attempting the same approach to diplomacy that has consistently failed ^[15]. That is a view about terms; the contract is a view about itineraries, and those two settle differently.

So: terms are being tested, not agreed. The counter-case is Ushakov's projects thread, which if it is the real channel would reprice sanctions-relief exposure ahead of any territorial settlement, and against it sits the six months Washington has spent focused on the Iran war ^[19] plus the absence of a named counterparty or sum ^[5]. What would break the testing read is a published framework carrying territorial or security-guarantee language, or Kyiv putting its prepared proposals where they can be read and priced ^[6]. Until one of those lands, the tradeable content of the weekend is 72 hours of quiet over two capitals ^[8][5].
