Against a total near 4.3 million [1], Tesla's 2.98 million [2] is close to seven of every ten vehicles in the action [8].
The publishers do not agree on the perimeter. Wired counts more than 2.9 million China-built Model 3s and Ys from 2019 to 2026 plus more than a million cars from eight named Chinese brands [9], and treats a separate recall of nearly 50,000 imported Teslas over weak driver monitoring as its own matter [10]. Engadget, citing Reuters, has Tesla plus ten others [1]. TechCrunch counts eleven carmakers and names Geely's Zeekr and Lynk & Co [11]. What moved the regulator was specific: three students died in a Xiaomi SU7 in 2025 after it hit a barrier and caught fire, with bystanders saying the retracted handles left them unable to open the doors [19]. China's answer came in February after a two-year review [13], and from 2027 mechanical releases inside and outside every door, working without power, are mandatory [12]. Europe is chasing the same failure mode through scoring, with Euro NCAP's 2026 protocol requiring powered exterior handles to remain operable after an impact [14]. The US is the laggard. NHTSA opened an investigation into Tesla's door-latching system late last year after Bloomberg's reporting, and is separately weighing whether a rule is needed [17]. Bloomberg has linked at least 15 deaths to Tesla handles failing in emergencies, and the agency has still not decided [16]. One lawmaker has proposed requiring manual releases to be "intuitive to use and readily accessible for the occupant" [18], while families of crash victims are already suing Tesla over the design [24]. Tesla did not respond to Wired's request for comment [25].
Some makers moved without being told. Rivian's R1 release requires removing a panel and pulling a cord, and the company relocated it on the R2 after customers and employees objected [20]. Ford briefly halted Mustang Mach-E sales in 2025 and recalled the car to cut the odds of latch malfunction after power loss [21]. Tesla's design head Franz von Holzhausen has said combining the electronic and manual release into a single button "makes a lot of sense" and is being worked on [22]. Tesla popularised the flush handle [23]; the 2027 rule means anyone who kept it has to engineer an exit a stranger can find without a sticker, and the cheapest version of that was never concealing it.
