Standard Chartered's $2 ENA target needs Ethena's USDe to grow eightfold

Standard Chartered set ENA targets of $0.42, $1.10 and $2.00 for end-2026 through end-2028, the first formal targets a major bank has put on Ethena's token. Nearly all of the upside depends on the USDe synthetic dollar growing back past a buyback trigger that it currently sits well below.

What happened

  • USDe supply stood at about $4.9 billion when the report came out on September 30, less than half its earlier peak above $10 billion.
  • Ethena's fee switch directs 95% of net protocol revenue to buying back ENA, but only once USDe supply exceeds $7.5 billion.
  • Standard Chartered projects USDe supply reaching $40 billion by the end of 2028.
  • ENA's all-time high is $1.52, set in April 2024, against a reference price of about $0.28 in the bank's report.

Why it matters

  • constraint Until USDe supply grows by about $2.6 billion, or 53%, Ethena's revenue is not committed to buying ENA, so the main support in the bank's case is not yet in the market.
  • decision The $0.42 end-2026 target asks for a 50% gain within about three months of the report, so buybacks help only if USDe clears the trigger in that same quarter.
  • precedent According to Crypto Briefing, a major bank has for the first time put dated targets and a stated chain of assumptions on this mid-cap token, so each year-end can be graded against USDe supply.

The $2.00 target for 2028 is about 7.1 times the $0.28 reference price [16], and the $40 billion USDe projection is about 8.2 times the supply outstanding when the bank published [15]. A token target that climbs almost in step with one product's supply is, I think, a supply forecast with a price attached. Or rather two forecasts, since reaching the buyback trigger and reaching $40 billion are separate bets. Crypto Briefing's account of the report does not include Ethena's revenue or the method the bank used to convert supply into a token price [22].

The first bet is the smaller one. The $7.5 billion trigger is no more than three quarters of USDe's earlier peak, so supply has been above it before [19]. Getting from the trigger to $40 billion takes another 5.3-fold increase [21]. USDe's yield currently comes from holding crypto assets against offsetting positions in perpetual futures [12]. Standard Chartered named the core risk itself: turning the decline around while keeping yields attractive as the product scales [11].

On the bank's path, USDe crosses $7.5 billion and keeps growing, and the fee switch spends 95% of net revenue on ENA [7]. On a second path, supply grows while yields thin, so the buyback runs on less revenue per dollar of USDe. On the third, USDe stalls below the trigger and ENA trades with no buyback beneath it. I'd put the most weight on the second. As Crypto Briefing notes, a yield strategy tends to look its best at small scale, and its returns can shrink as more money piles in [13].

The bank's answer to compression is breadth. It expects Ethena to move beyond perpetual futures into DeFi lending and real-world assets [8]. That diversification is the best argument against calling this a one-product bet, though it is still a claim about how USDe earns.

Even on schedule, holders wait. The $1.10 target for 2027 would leave ENA about 28% below its record, and only the 2028 target clears it, by about 32% [18]. The bank also expects ENA to outperform bitcoin and ether by the end of 2028 [4]. The view can be checked against the record. Suppose ENA reaches $0.42 by year-end while USDe is still short of $7.5 billion, or USDe clears the trigger and the token barely moves. Either way, product and token are less tightly linked than the bank's targets assume [2].

What to watch

  • About 1.4 billion ENA unlock on October 5, 2026, roughly $392 million at the report's $0.28 reference price, arriving before any buyback is running.
  • Any Ethena disclosure of net protocol revenue, the figure that would size what 95% buys once USDe passes $7.5 billion.
